California Emissions Test - Questions

I just passed my Ca smog test...dont have many mods but mac flowpaths, k&n drop in, trickflow plenum and ford racing tb.... i took off the TB remembering it said wasnt legal for use in Cali.....left the plenum. The tester didnt look under the car for any aftermarket pipe.

yup i cant remember what decibel level it is though............but add another reason on why California is the King of Emissions and taht =

I've never been tested for this before. I doubt I'd have any trouble with measly flowmasters, but it's just one more reason for me to dislike this state. Pretty soon there will be horsepower restrictions too.

its tested when you get a noise violation from the police. you go to a smog ref and they test it for you.

thats cause its not about the emissions at all. they want to screw you over in as many ways they can to get your money. and since people like us who modify our vehicles only account for a mere fraction of all that are on the road in the normal cars, they can get away with screwing with us, cause were not big enough nor strong enough to stop it.

i find it hilarious when i know of peoples cars with huge cams and turbos, built motors and gutted cats getting equal or better emissions than stock cars of the same model. alot of times modified cars run better than stock ones, both around town and full throttle. happened to my buddy, they did the sniffer first, passed with flying colors, then the guy popped the hood, and was like "Holy ****!!" luckily he was cool enough to pass him anyways.

i guess i am kinda screwed then because the guy who i baught the car from got the offroad x and i dont have the stock mid pipe. i did the intake and plenum so if i need to it will take 45 mins to take replace. i am just wondering if i need to because i have been getting smogged at the same place for the last 4 years or so, so the guy knows me and my familys vehicles. i remember taking my old v6 their before to get smogged (it was totalled) and he didnt look under the car or anything so maybe this guy will cut me a break. i really dont want to have to buy a stock mid pipe for my car to pass smog. also, i plan on getting a blower soon, not sure wich one to get, i know vortech and kb is ok, what about novi 2000? also, with vortech and kb, they say that only a certain psi is legal in all 50 states. if one of my tunes is the 50 state legal one i am ok right? thanks alot for the help, i just baught my car a few months about and i am not sure when iwill have to do next smog, i am still kinda scared though. i know car passed smog when i baught it, but then, it only had the x pipe. thanks again for the responses.

The ATI procharger and all those you mentioned are ok for emissions but your right on the p.s.i you can only run it with what the kit came with, let's say you got the KB 9# intercooled kit that is what you will have to run on the emissions test

We might as well face it, Cali has always been the toughest state for emissions and most states will probably follow its lead. My guess is that in the next 5-10 years, most states will have similar emissions testing as Cali does. Unless the laws change, it will be hard to mod cars even if the mods reduce emissions. The emissions laws are not very effective for reducing pollution, they started with good intentions but they have turned into a money making business for the government. If they were really serious about cleaning up the air, we would all be driving hybrids or some kind of super efficient car, and they would only do the sniff test and not the OBD test. People can fool the OBD test, but it is real hard to fool the sniffer The same theory applies to speeding, if speed kills than why have most stated increased the speed limit from 55 to 70 on the Interstates. Speeding tickets are just a money making scam too. They should spend the time teaching people how to be better drivers not just slower drivers.

well IMHO if a modified car runs cleaner then when it was stock we should get a break from emissions testing.....
