Calling all guys who have rebuilt there trac loc

Ok , i just put in the carrier after rebuilding the trac loc and putting in 3.73 gears, set the backlash to .009 but with a buddy holding the other wheel the opposite wheel spins with it. We treid it on his 90 lx with a working trac loc and i am able to hold 1 wheel while he spins the other. Now im assuming i putting to much shim in the traction loc i guess right? I put .045 on both sides, is it ok to use like a .030???? Cause i was told to use the same size stock shims if not bigger, so what kinda shims did all you use?

I didn't usea schim at all. I rebuilt the traction loc with one of my old clutchs. So I went with the metal end then a clutch a metal piece clutch metal clutch metal clutch then side gear. They pack mic'd out the same measurement as what came out of my traction loc. I haven't driven it yet so I'll try to remember to update on how it worked. Should be tighter then before though.

Guess il try it again, im sick of this job already , doing gears is easy by the way, dont spend the 400 plus to get em done unless its a daily driver and it needs done right now.

how easy? i've been debating trying myself, but i have heard its a pretty big task for the backyard mechanic! (plus i don't even have a back yard, in an Apt.). My friend says he's done it before and its not bad, but then again he blew his tranny not long after... He's a deaf mute, so also maybe didnt hear gears howling too.....
Do you need any special tools (such as for setting backlash?) i heard u do, and they are pretty expensive...
Also while i'm doing gears, i'll be rebuilding the trac-lok. is this easy? I just think this is one of those jobs i should let a pro do, and know its done right..... opinions?

You need a specail tool, i got one at summit for 35.00 dollars, all you do is set backlash to .008 to .015 is your backlash is less than .008 you add a shim to the drivers side and vise versa. very easy, it can look intimidating, but everything does at first.

My concern on the trac loc rebuild is havin it to lose that it work work right, but
.045 will not work its to tight, if i just stuck some .030 shims in it do you all think it will be ok?? By the way all the tabs on the clutches were broke off except for 1, no wonder i had 1 wheel peels!

That's normal for a new rebuild traction lok. They loosen up after you drive them a bit. The reason you can spin your buddies is because it's been used for a while. As soon as the steels start to glaze they loosen up alot compared to what you're seeing with yours now. If you didn't soak your frictions in friction modifier it'll make all kinds of crazy noises the first few times you drive. You'll think there's something wrong with it. If you have it together with the .045 shim, then it can't be too much. If you have too much shim it simply won't go together at all. I always shim them as tight as I can and still be able to rotate the spider gears into the trac-lok housing.

Would that be rotating the spiders in by hand? I had to persuade mine in with a small block of wood and a hammer. I could barely get the crosspin back in the carrier. I got some clunking for a long time on low speed, tight turns. One day I got a fairly loud bang turning into a parking lot and its been quiet ever since. I hope I didn't shear the tabs off the friction plates.

I did the same thing as you. No shims just the alternate clutch/steel install method with an extra clutch. Drives like a champ. No noises or anything just hooks up nice.
