Cam choices???

ok, i have a 347 stroker and im not sure if my comp cam (.579/.579) will clear piston to valve and i dont want it to be to close cause i was told its alot easier to drop a valve like that. Ive got a short block frm eagle all forged and some tfs heads track heat 185s, 1.7 rockers, and holley intake. any suggestions on what cam i should go w if not this one? ive been told the trick flow stage 1 is a great cam but the stage 2 really sucks!!

you could always just get 1.6 ratio rockers instead of 1.7's.

your actual lift with the 1.7s is gonna be around .615 which you dont really need anyways unless its gonna be mostly a track car.

im not too sure about this but ive heard people say its not really the lift that makes the difference in the piston to valve clearance its the duration. what's the duration on that cam?

correct because the piston is going to be at the bottom of the cylinder when the valve is at its max lift. its all in the valve events

yes you will most likley need to have the pistons fly cut. Duration and LSA have more to do with ptv clearance. I have a 302 with TFS heads and TFS stage 1 cam had to cut the pistons because of the larger valves.

Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift 236
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift 248
Duration at 050 inch Lift 236 int./248 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration 286
Advertised Exhaust Duration 300
Advertised Duration 286 int./300 exh.
ok, would u also b able what the lift would b with the 1.6 rockers? cause my heads could only take up to .600 lift. thanks!!

What cam are we talking about here? Stage 2 Trick Flow?

If so then the .579 lift is with the 1.7 rocker arms. Not .615 as stated ealier.
With 1.6's it would be .545 lift.

Just so you know. To get total lift you multiply the cam lobe lift by the rocker ratio being used.
Ex: .340x 1.6= .544
.340x 1.7= .578

i believe hes saying the cam is rated for .579 with 1.6 rr. so if thats the case it would be .615. i dont believe comp cam would advertise the max lift with 1.7 rr. but i could be wrong. =) just clarifying

o we r talking about a comp cam w a .579/.579 lift w stock rockers and i wasnt to sure what cam to go w if this cam didnt clear. and i have 1.7 roller rockers. and im not sure if itll clear w 1.6??

I edited my post because I made assumption it was the Trick Flow stage 2.

But as far as Comp Cams ratings. It depends on what the cam was designed for. Not all cams are designed with 1.6 rockers in mind. Some specifically state wether 1.6 or 1.7 are to be used.

the only way to know is to actually just put it in and check valve clearance. we dont know how radical the ramp rates are on this cam. max lift wont effect clearance. and im assuming ur heads are only good to flow max cfm at .600?

If thats the lift with stock rockers, then thats the lift with 1.6 rockers as the stock rocker ratio is 1.6. So then 1.7 rockers would in fact be .615 total lift.
