Cam experts inside pls

that is my thoughts as well, longer duration and higher LSA should equal more power on a blown motor correct? this is more for an educational purpose on my behalf than o decide if I am swapping cams. I dont think it would be worth the trouble even if the 2nd option would make more power to go through a cam swap.

also if anyone knows the brand of these cams please keep it to yourself, I would like this to be as objective as possible.
 
I'd say option number 1 based on lift and duration..

However, not to hijack thread, just looking for a quick answer... what exactly is LSA? And is a lower number better than a higher number for N/A purposes? Just wondering :)
 
I would go with option 1 for a SC, more aggressiver duration and lift. I do like Cam #2 profile in a SC except the LSA and it is not as a aggressive.

LSA = Lobe Separation Angle

Some will argue that a tighter LSA say 108 is better than 114 in an N/A application. I am not sure I totally agree with that. I went with 114 LSA in my N/A build, probably could have got away with 112. I wouldn't have gone with anything tighter than that though.

Thanks for the info.. the cams that are going in my car (as we speak actually :D) have an LSA of 108... .562/.576 lift.. 225/235 duration @ .050"

I disagree. #2 would traditionally be the better choice,here's why: Although the LSA is worse on #2 the reduction in duration more than makes up for it. The tighter LSA will allow more pressure to bleed off but #2 has 17 and 12 degrees less duration @.050,(who knows how much less the total duration difference actually is!!),so you're going to have less overlap than #1. Less overlap,more power,especially in the lower rpm range. Now if you're building a track only,high rpm race motor then yes,go big but you'll have a much more driveable,less finicky engine with #2 and the power difference will be small. 220/230 is still pretty healthy for a small cube engine and is 15-20 more degrees than factory so you're still moving up from factory cam power levels.
 
Option A would produce more power, but I may be kindof worried about driveabillity. BUT since your motor is built (that cam will love RPM, but will loose quite a bit in the low RPM range) you can run out to the RPM it wants.

Now option A has more durration (thats the length the valve stayes open) so IMO it would make more power...and it also has more LSA (113 vs 112). Generally blower cars like the LSA # to be higher (less over lap).

PERSONALLY I would call up Scott @ VT engines and tell him what your purpose is for the car and how much boost, and all that good stuff and let him grind you a custom profile.....and go with whatevr they give you. Those guys seriously know what they are doing.

Given the 2 choices above...for MY car (being a DD) I would go with option 2 due to the driveability....and like above said probably wouldnt loose but around 10-20HP at best.
 
OK now that I have gotten some responses with an open mind... and all good advice I must add. all the responses were well thought out and made me think.

option 1 are the cams I have right now from Patriot performance.:D

they do look like they are radical because of the duration, but are very easy on drivability.. i would say extremely so.

option 2 is the VT stage 2 blower cam grind they do look like a good cam.. but in reference to red200gt (you made me think and thats what i was looking for different opinions) I must say I think the duration on the patriots would help the cam because with the higher LSA the longer Duration would only help to move more air in the cylinder. I think it is actually gonna be a slight difference in power either way though the more i think about it, but I think I am gonna stick with the patriots.

I will gove you guys a dyno.. one day lol,.. so we can look at their performance :nice:
 
^ Good choise...though I am EXTREMELY surprised about the driveability.

the cam in my 66 has about the same lift and 10*s more durration and its RADICLE! Sounds like a darn race car, shakes the car all over the place. (I have a vid floating around in the Talk area if you havnt heard it) . That cam pulls well past 7000RPM and its very easy to hit the 7500 limiter. But these two motors are comepletely different so what I just said doesnt matter :D LOL
