I'm sure this has been discussed before but I could not find the thread. I have an 89 2.3 in my mustang LX. I want a roller swap. I have a 1995 2.3 roller cam and followers from a ranger. Will this pairing work or should I also swap the head? Thanks in advance, Jay

The ’89 Mustang 2.3 block is already roller-capable. You can run the ’95 Ranger roller cam as long as you also use the matching roller followers and correct cam hardware. The head does not need to be swapped -- single-plug Mustang heads work fine with roller cams. Just be sure the cam gear is compatible and don’t mix flat and roller parts.

What are your plans for the engine? Bottom end refresh? Boost?

If it runs well and you're already running oil that is high in zinc, the swap to roller isn't really worth much on its own.

Not looking for too much honestly. I just want to quiet down the valve train. I've noticed some cam/follower wear while changing the rocker cover gasket. Figured I could replace lifters, cam and followers and reduce some noise and wear. It has 145Lbs compression across the board and I scoped the bores, they look fine. I have had the car since new in 89 and have "0" plans for more power. I does what I want it to, just a cruiser. You state "Cam Hardware" What are you referring to? I figured, Cam, Followers, Lifters, Cam sprocket and a gasket set would do. You mention cam gear compatibility? Elaborate? Thanks!

Just me but you really need to get over on The Ranger Station forums. They have done this swap a gillion times and there is some good info there.

Ranger roller cam swap

Hey, been reading on a bunch of easy upgrades for the merk motor Im putting into the ranger. And the Ranger Roller hydrolic cam keeps showing up as an upgrade. Anyone done this? Is it worth while? Is it a direct bolt on where the merk is a slider cam, and ranger is a roller? Done a bunch of...
