I have a 351C with a comp cams 280H magnum cam. Since I've installed the cam I've sheared off the roll pin, which holds the gear on the distributor shaft, several times. Now I've started eating the distributor gear. About a month ago I destroyed a gear, stripped all but 7 teeth off. I replaced the gear, put about 25 or so miles on it. I pulled the distributor today to check if there was any wear and found the teeth half ground off? I figured the cam was walking around, so I pulled the front of the motor off and check the cam retainer plate. It seems to be doing it's job, the side of the plate facing the cam has little to no wear on it as though the cam isn't even riding against it. I can't figure out what's going on here, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Running a high volume or high pressure oil pump also puts additional load on the distibutor gear and I suppose the cam sprocket. The only other thing that comes to mind are high valve spring rates.

You are not mixing the steel cam gear and soft distro gear are you?

Another thought, when you have the timing cover off, check if the chain is rubbing anywhere on the block or back of the timing cover. Also check if the chain has any binding on any of the links.

I've heard of some chains not fitting as well as others. I've never run anthing but Ford Racing double-rollers and have never had issues.
