Engine Cam Install

Well I got my engine block back from the machine shop after being bored, cam bearings, and freeze plugs installed. During the reassembly I noticed the cam moves back and forth pretty good. If I install the thrust plate the cam can move a good 1/4" back and forth between the rear freeze plug and the thrust plate. I don't remember this much play.. cant be right unless the timing gear holds the cam in place and the two ride on the thrust plate.. Did the shop not install the rear freeze plug correctly? Thanks guys

bolting the cam sprocket on will draw the cam onto the plate, and both the cam and sprocket will ride on the plate. i think the spec is like .001-.005" of endplay after the sprocket is bolted on.

The plug is there only to close the hole, it has no role in locating or controlling the cams end play. As noted, the gear will be the part that controls the end play. As long as the cam clears the plug once the gear is in place, the plug is fine.
