cam question

i want a lil more power in my stang, but i dont want to do any headswaps, so i basically want to keep car engine stock.. can someone please school me on cams, i know aftermarket cams keep the valves open longer, but what gains can i see from adding better cams?

The cars that do headswaps are generally the 1996-1998 GT's. The heads you have are fine.

A search will get you quite a few posts on cams and what to expect from them.

cams have lift(how much the valve opens), duration(how long the valve stays open) and lobe center(the mesurement between max lift on intake and exhaust). You can study cam specs all you want but most people are never going to be smarter than the people who make them. If you car is pretty stock I would just use an off the shelf grind. they have put time into researching what make power. once you port your heads or run a differnet intake, power adder, etc you may want a custom grind right for you exact combo.

I would replace springs if replacing cams but you may get away with running vt stage one's without them. I have read of people running the vt's with stock srings even though I would not do that. I don't belive comp recomends them but then agian they make valvesprings as well.

I think the vt stage I have the best hp I have seen for a mild cam. seen multiple 20hp dyno sheets. now comp 270's and vt stage II seem to make great power but they have a pretty aggresive idle.
