Cam recommendations for 289 please....

Ok, my engine is as 65 289, afr 165's w/ 1.6 roller rockers, weiand x-celerator single plane, holley 600 dp, tri-y's, petronix recuvred dizzy,
4sp, 3.80 posi. I just ordered the heads as a B-day present to myself. I'm looking for a cam to replace my mild one in there now. Need a solid lifter non-roller cam. Anyone have any recommendations? Car is a street/strip vehicle, seems to be more strip lately... Thanks for any comments

What cam do you have now? I'd also recommend milling the AFR's to get the chambers down to 53-54 cc's so you don't loose any compression.

Honestly man, i wish i knew, engine was built in 1993 w/ my father and I don't even recall what brand it was. i know it's mild as we were not going for all out performance and there is no lumpyness to it. With the stock heads i've had on it the car pulls hard to 5200 and that's it...

You'll spend a little more than an OTS cam but there's no guess work involved. Regardless of which cam you do end up going with, expect to upgrade the stock AFR spring unless you got the spring package because the springs are pretty much meant for stock cams.

You don't need a large cam, the heads flow enough air air that on a small cubed motor you can keep a short duration and make the lift do the work. A short duration will also keep you dynamic compression ratio down as the intake valve will typically close sooner

Just to give you an idea, I have the 185's on my 302 and Jay set me up with a cam that's 219/226 @ .050 .550/.540 with a 114 LSA
