Cam swap question.

I have my engine torn down for my HCI swap. I'm down to the harmonic balancer and pulley.

My question is, how do I remove the bolts holding the balancer and pulley on? The crank just wants to spin? Is there a way to hold the crank (without pulling the tranny so I can have a friend hold the flywheel)?

I appreciate any suggestions.

[I posted in 94-95 too, but you guys probably run into this too.]

Just remove the pully form the balancer. Mine was very rusted and needed some help with a slight tap from a hammer. Remove the balancer with a pully puller. Remove the retaining bolt that is in the front snout of the crank and install the puller with the bolts that the crank pully used. With the addition of a impact driver the force of the puller will slowly remove the balancer from the crank. When I pefromed the smae H/C/I install I need a front seal for the timing cover check yours because now is the time to replace it.

Put the car in gear. Some liquid wrench will help some too...

if the engine is out and mounted on a stand, screw in a couple of flywheel bolts into the back of the crank and put a bar or something between them. Now you can let it spin until it wedges against the stand. Voila'

if the engine is still in, try the old ebrake and in-gear method stated above

def. put in a new front seal while you are there.

anyone know the part number from summit for a front seal? im bout to order the rest of my stuff soon as trickflow responds what length pushrods i need.

You can get the front seal from your local parts store and save on the shipping and handling charges. Which set of Trick flow heads do you have? Twisted Wedge on a 5.0 with stock deck height should be 6.75 in long. Thats .50 in longer than stock. This is a good starting piont for your reference.

i have twisted wedge heads and 1.6 rockers. stock block and all. TFS stage 1 cam (if that matters). it wont matter about shipping because i am getting a lot of other stuff in the order also, including the cam, lifters, bolts, rtv, gaskets, etc.

You have a similar set up that I just completed a week ago 6.75 long hardened pushrods will put you right there. I called Trick Flow and thats what they recommended with 1.6RR and a cam of the same specs. You will notice and good jump up in power thruoght the rmp range. You will be very happy.

Are you talking about the front seal on the crank?

BTW, thanks for the tip about putting it in gear. I put it in 5th and out she came! Starting to get a little excited - once I pull the cam I can finally reverse the process and start putting stuff back in.

Yes, the seal you should replace is located in the timing cover and when cover is installed it will seal oil from coming out around the crank. When you remove the cover it will be easier to see.
