cam timing pics please comment

i broke down and pulled the valve cover off of the passenger side. i have the crank at tdc. does this look correct? I know the notch is a little hard to see but it is right around 12 o'clock. the timing chain has a black link that is 2 teeth of from the notch. does that make a difference? would like to know if i need to proceed further. don't want to pull everything off if i don't need too.

Did you degree the cams? Trying to see why the link doesnt match up...

no i didn't install the cams so i don't know if they were degreed or not

The link won't always line up. The only time it will line up with the mark on the cam gear is if the opposite end of the chain (other dark link) is lined up on the timing mark on the crank.

True that is why I asked, I could't tell if he was just setting it up from that photo.

FWIIW, been working with the OP on a different forum. The original symptom was raw fuel coming out the right hand side. All of the usual causes were ruled out.

The shop had stated the motor was out of time. The OP's symptoms fit the symtom I have seen working other threads.

As it turns out, the right hand cam is indeed 180 degrees out of phase.

No damage so far. Can you figure out why?

Think about it. If the cam is EXACTLY 180 degrees out of phase relative to the other what will happen? The valve events are reversed. When the intake valve is susposed to open, the exhaust valve will open. When the exhaust value is susposed to open, the intake valve will open.

The motor makes poor power becasue the fuel injectors spray on a closed intake value. So this explains why there is so much fuel as it basically builds up on the intake value and enters the cylinder at the wrong time.

This is the kicker. A compression test shows NORMAL results!

In terms of each individual cylinder, the valve opening and closing events are correctly timed with regards to the piston moving up and down.

Make sense?

This is the 3rd one for me to be involved with.

Perhaps I didn't specify... I fully understand that a cam timed 180* incorrectly wouldn't cause PTV issues, but how the F did it get that way to begin with??

i am assuming the engine builder didn't understand how to time the cams.

i thought the black links or the darkened links need to be lined up with the little dimple on the cam sprocket? I lined those 2 up when i installed my cams.
