I recently installed a new cam in my 1984 5.0. I have the correct cam for the application. The question I have is, should there be alot of endplay in the cam. With the lifters out, timing chain and gears installed, and cam thrust plate installed, the cam still moves 3/8 to 1/2 inch. Is that normal? If not what do I need to do to cure problem. I dont recall ever having that much movement in the past. The cam is comp cam xtreme 268 h. Not a big cam. Any help would be appreciated

Absolutely not. Normal camshaft endplay should be between .001-.007". Note that some cam gear use a spacer, some do not.
