Can hydroboost be used on a 5.0 engine?

Thinking ahead for a future 4.6L swap, but can a hydroboost system be used with a 5.0's Power steering? Are their any vehicles (explorer?) which use a 5.0 or 351 with a similar setup? Or are they all vacuum?

Taking it one step further...can it be used with ABS as well? A 94-95 system?

I don't see why not. I can use a 1996 power steering rack on a fox. I don't think it's different for 1999. 1999's could come with hydroboost and I'm pretty sure they could come with ABS.

What I really don't know is if the difference between the 1999s that had vacuum boost or hydroboost was because they had ABS or not.

Well my concern is plumbing it up to a 5.0's power steering pump

Well the 2000 mustang v8 power steering pump interchanges with the 1996 mustang v8 power steering pump according to car-part's interchange. The 2000 has hydroboost and the 1996 does not.

I know I can run a 1996 power steering rack in a fox with a fox 5.0 P/S pump.

So if a fox 5.0 pump can run a 1996 rack. And the 1996 pump is the same as the 2000 pump that runs hydroboost, I see no reason why a 5.0 pump can't also run hydroboost.

Whatever needs to be done with the lines, in order to do the SN95 power steering rack swap, would also need to be done to run that pressure line to the hydroboost. From there, you would simply use the factory line to go from a 2000 hydroboost to the rack. The 1996 and 2000 call for the same rack & pinion.

The only snag may be if you're using a fox rack, in which you need to know if that factory line from the 2000 hydroboost to the rack will fit. I would go to a parts counter and have them bring a rack for your car, with that 2000 booster-to-rack power line and see if it fits. You may need to get an adapter fitting.

The return lines for both can simply be T'd together with standard fittings and hose clamps, because it's not under pressure.

Ah yes....wasn't thinking about the V6 model. Hmmm

Because the v6 uses the same pump as the 93. That means the v6 line from the pump to the booster will work with your fox pump. So really the only thing you have left to figure out, is will the pressure line from the booster to the fox rack fit the fox rack, assumig you're not going with an SN95 rack.

Haven't decided that yet.

I was going to elim Power steering and run a manual rack, but if i do a 4V swap down the road, the vac booster would get in the way and i'd need to go back to hydroboost.

That's the reason why i want to do it now. Get it set up...and then just attach the lines to the 4.6 pump when/if i drop the 4.6L in

That is a good question. Trial and error would be the only way to find out. I can help you with on thing though. If you run a hydroboost on a 5.0L car, you will need to oblong the holes in the firewall and you will need a hybroboost pedal set up.

Can you elaborate a little bit more? I take it your talking about the 4 bolts that mount the booster to the pedal assembly while sandwiching the firewall. If the bolts don't line up that's easy enough to fix.

But when you say a hydroboost pedal setup, is there more to be concerned with than the boltpattern of the booster?

You need to drill an extra hole to get the hydroboost in. Some work without modification, some don't. Varies by car.
Instead of elongating holes to make it like up, i believe some guys cut or bend the shaft.
Obviously that is work for a qualified expert, because it has to be welded correctly.

All 94-04 V6's have vacuum boosters, not hydroboost. The hydroboost systems came in all 96-04 4.6L GT's and Cobras. This may explain why the P/S pump is the same from the V6's to the 5.0's.

Interesting. When you do a parts search for a 99 v6, you're asked if it has hydroboost or not. But checking the junkyards, I can't find a single hydroboost unit on a v6 car. So it would seem you're correct.

So with that information, can you use a 96+ v8 P/S pump on a 5.0?

Nope. Not even remotely similar.

I need to ask over in 4.6L tech how the hydroboost is plumbed. Perhaps it's just a matter of routing hoses from the 5.0 pump a specific way.

Or i could look under my own hood considering i own a 4.6 Mustang

Oh that part is easy.

The hydroboost has a high pressure in, a high pressure out, and a return. The high pressure in comes from the pump. High pressure out goes to your rack.

I still say the stock 5.0 pump is up to the task, IMO.

I think the hard part is going to be finding lines with the correct fittings or figuring out the adapters you'll need.

i have done this to a 5.0 tbird i used everything for a 5.0 lincoln the booster bolts right in no mods to firewall the p/s pump has a dual return for steering rack and for hydrobooster lines every thing worked
