Can I replace Radio with Ford Nav?

My friend has a 2006 V6 convertible with the shaker 500.

Can he put the new Ford navigation system from a new Mustang in it's place?

Aprroximate price from Ford parts? Install?

He wants the Ford unit so it looks more "stock" and is less likely to be stolen, since he has the convertible.

P.S.- I'm sure this has been asked many times, but I searched and couldn't find anything...

Here is a picture from the JL Audio Mustang. It has the factory Ford nav unit from the Expedition. .


The heat and ac control panel has been moved to the overhead console. I don't like the look with them being up there.

Doesn't the GT500 have a nav option? I thought I saw one like that and the HVAC controls were still in the stock location.

Yes, and my 08 GT vert has it, but what I want to know is how hard it would be to retrofit one into my friend's 06.

Difficult and expensive.
Aftermarket will be a better unit and cost less. That's just the truth.

The Pioneer Avic-D3 looks very close to the stock part. Can get it for like $600, if you look around.

Navigation alternative

If you have a web enabled phone and buy the data package, you can get free nav, including traffic info and directions, in your hands from Google Maps. It is surprisingly good. The only rub is that it isn't true GPS, it shows the location of the tower you are connected to instead of your pinpoint location, but that is close enough for my driving needs. Also, no spoken directions, but it will plan a route for you and track you as you go.

I use my blackberry for nav all the time and the price is right. Most of the new phones are cheaper than a GPS unit, but some of the screens are small. (Yah, my work pays for the berry )

Notice that the factory unit shown is a Pioneer. Pioneer has some new units out, voice controlled, with controls for ipod, Bluetooth and satellite radio built in. List prices start at under $800. You won't get a factory unit for that and it won't work with an ipod or Bluetooth without adapters.

Yes, and I would think a Pioneer Avic D3 is better and cheaper, but he wants the total factory look so he doesn't have to worry every time he leaves the car...

Dont do it. The Ford nav unit is TERRIBLE I have one in my 08 F-350. Its very ambiguous and the navigation style is very cumbersome. You can get a much better and cheaper one if you go aftermarket such as the mentioned pioneer units or (my personal favorite) an Eclipse unit. The navigation style in the Eclipse is, in my opinion, sensational.

Aftermarket is the only way to go that will make your time and money worthwhile! You will get more features, more power for less money. If he insists on getting a factory piece then so be it. I'd bet that if nav wasn't a factory option at all in '06, they might not even have the wiring for it on the harness. I will ask my buddy if it can be done and post back.

It will plug directly in with the Shaker 500 system, but won't work with the Shaker 1000. Now the thing he has to find out is price.

There is a long thread called "Factory Nav in a 2005 Stang" over on TMS. To give you the short, you need to have the radio programmed for your year/options and it will work. ANY car built before job 2, 2007 (also called 2007.5) will have an ERROR message everytime you use the nav. But it still functions. Some have claimed a fix, others say it doesn't work (replace instrument cluster, wheel speed sensors, etc $$$).

The one pictured is from the Expedition. Also, the dash piece is custom made to clean up around what is now the new home of a dvd player where the heater ac controls used to be.
