Can i use slicks on a stock auto GT?

A buddy of mine wants to take me to the track to see what my car can do. He also wants me to put slicks on my car. I have the feeling though that my stock rear end cannot handle the bite that slicks have to offer. Plus if they do work will they cause problems in the long run? Also just by the mods in my sig what do you think i will run an a 1/4 time wise?

Go for it. With an auto you have much less chance of breaking something than a guy with a stick. Let me now how you do. 60 foots especially.

There's a guy with an '03 Cobra with a bone stock GT rearend in his car (except for the 4.10's) and he launches on slicks. Hasn't broke anything and hooks like a mofo! He's been running like that since October of last year

I think dr's are harder on your launches due to the stiffer and smaller side wall.

If you break it oh well, rebuild it 31 spline setup with an upgraded diff

With the auto you will be fine. Make sure you back into the puddle so you can break them loose easier. I have seen two guys thrash their diff by not doing that. After that they had the one wheel peel. Not fun. Other than that with the auto you should be all set.

You wont hurt anything with the stock torque converter. It launches waaaay to low to hurt the rearend.

I have MT ET Streets on mine. They work great.

Mickey Thompson tech support recommended ET Street Radials for autos and ET Streets for 5-speeds. The cheater slicks have a softer sidewall and hook better when launched hard to cause a little wrinkle. The autos don't hit the tires as hard and the stiffer sidewall of the radials helps keep the slush to a minumum.

i have a stock auto behind a 5.4 3v 326hp/365+ lb-ft. no slush no issues. the programmer shift firmness is the only alteration. of course j mod is coming soon. i am also using a 'pi' 2800 converter. i'm going to lose it in favor of a 3400 flash stall. nothing wrong with 4r70w. i shift 1-2 at 5800 and have the shift from 2-3 happening at 5800 also.

if it can take that, it can take anything a n/a 4.6 will do to it.

I'm back from the track. Since last years best, in the sig, I added BBk off road x-pipe, J-mod and BFG drag radials. The drag radials are on the wear bars. Ran a new best, 13.634 @ 101.47, 2.042 60 ft. Still couldn't hook. Bad track pep?
Friend of mine who has run 13.4 in his 03 Mach I, ran low 14's all night with 2.3 60ft's. So I guess I was doing alright.

how cold was it out? cold weather makes it really hard to hook

first off, I realize I am running a little more rwhp, but my rear has already had a bad grinding noise in it and had to be rebuilt and it will be upgraded to 31 spline soon. i cut a 1.80 60' the first time out with my stock converter and trans only having chip adjustments,(390 rwhp 12.39), so with less hp than my sold 03 cobra 6 speed (470 rwhp, 12.29, after 5 tries), I realize with practice I could of run better times with my cobra, but the hard shifting really beats the hell out of the drivetrain on a stick and it was much easier to run better times with the auto.

It was cool. Around 60f and dropped as the evening went on. The first run was my best run. It's a new track surface too. One run was against an 03 Mustang GT with similar mods and a stick. He beat me at the lights but I caught and passed him just after the 330 mark. Then he backed off after the 1/8. Too bad because I really would have liked to check out the results on the time slip. I find even with street tires I generally do better than a stick car for the first 330ft and they have to try and catch up. Their mph is generally higher.
On a local forum, a guy was complaining about the track being slick. He sayed he thinks he's started a new sport. Drag drifting. So I guess I still might be able to knock off another tenth or two.

Well, DRs would be better for you...I doubt you would have any traction issues. And even with slicks I really dont think your time would improve THAT much. I wouldnt go through the hassle until you get some...alot more power

I'd say the tranny would go before the rear. Rears in my experience only break over time, even with lots hp and tq, it's still usually a matter of time. I've never broken a rear, I've had many whine tho, to the point that I had replacements.
