can running rich damage the engine?

Ok, I had my car dyno tuned almost a year ago, and you can see below the a/f is good. The car has been running with no problems at all...and just the other day, it came up with a P0162 code...engine running rich. Any ideas on what could be causing this? If I just let it go for now, can this hurt the engine?

There are quite a few things that cause a rich condition but it won't neccesarily hurt anything other than fouling a plug or two. Pull your plugs and see what they look like. You could have a vacuum leak or maybe just a dirty filter. Check the simple stuff first then work up.

yup check the plugs and stuff like that and then get into it deeper if it's not that

I agree with the guys, sounds like a small tune-up kind of issue here, probally nothing serious.

rescan the code the get back to us. po162 does not exist. po172 and po175 are the rich codes. 172 is bank 1 175 is bank 2

I think it's an 02 sensor.

First-that is the flattest a/f ratio curve i have ever seen....
Second-check plugs and air filter
Third-oxygen sensor

bank 1 rich means that the left side of your engine is running rich. The passenger side is within the recommended afr for the computer. Chances are you're going to need a new oxygen sensor on the drivers bank. It will be the front one.

Try switching the two to see if that does anything. If the code SAME code comes back, then you're going to have to look elsewhere. Try cleaning the MAF with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner or something. Good luck

I agree with switching the o2's. If the code follows the o2, the sensor is bad. If not you have to look elsewhere. BUT, bank 1 is the passenger side, not the drivers side. And p0172 means that the the adaptive fuel trims have reached thier limit on the rich side, meaning that the eec thinks that bank is to rich and can no longer compensate for it.

ok po172 make much more sense. if you have access to a scan too that will give you live data, you can look at the long term fuel trim on bank 1 and bank 2 and compare them. anything over 10 percent in either direction is abnormal.

for this code you should see fuel trim dats that looks like this

ltfueltrim1= -25

ltfueltrim2 = ? <--- we need to find out this one. if this value is over -15 percent then you will soon have a po175 code too.

if you are rich on both banks then i would look at your maf sensor and tune.

if just one bank replace that 02 sensor and go from there.

there was just the one code, no 075 code...I unplugged the battery to delete the code..and have driven almost 60 miles since then...and no code...it may have been a temporary glitch...we will see...

spoke too soon...75 miles later and it just came on...I will have to try switching the O2 sensors...I am getting ready to put the car into a 3 year "sleep" since I am going to germany...I wanted to make sure that this wouldn't cause any additional problems if I kept driving this for a couple more months like this and just dealt with it when I got back...
