hanlon or D&D dont have anything.


i am sure they have them in small parts kits but just need one snap ring

you think if i called them they would sell me just the small snap ring i need??

Are you talking about the big thick C shaped one? Or the small snap ring on the end?

For the snap ring you could get this and be set for the rest of your life lol. Im pretty sure the inside diameter of the external snap ring that you need is .900".

I measured the big C shaped clip across the wide part on the inside and it was 1.300"

Ford dealer. They can bring up an exploded view of the T-5 and you can point out what part you need. Since the T-5 is still a recent tranny for Ford, they should have no problem getting you that part.

well after we examined it. it got more confusing.

what i found
was the small 5th gear off its splines and hanging freely on the mainshaft. closer to the speedo drive gear.
and a metal ring. looks like a c was around the shaft too.

its pretty thick and its what hold 5th gear on. but if its a snap ring then just ends with the holes broke off. but it should still be holding it on the way it looks. it shouldnt havecame off.

I know what one your talking about now. If you were putting a ton of stress on 5th gear, that could have forced it to snap off, like say if you were flooring it in 5th gear.

How about your local dealership?

These things are not that difficult to find parts for.

The way that whole 5th gear / reverse shaft goes together there near the end is slightly different from model to model. My 87 was quite different from my 93. The 87 had no provision for a stopper, but the 93 required it, and oh yeah, it went on in a particular direction (found that out the hard way). Anyway, if worse comes to worse and you know you've got all the parts necessary to put the shaft back together correctly with the exception of the snap ring, you can size up replacement snap rings for automotive air conditioner compressor clutches as a direct replacement. Believe it or not, I found the correct size for my T-5 this way and it worked fine at least until I sold the car, 88K later. OBTW, you're paying a couple of bucks instead of Stealership prices. Not to mention, I'd be surprised to find that Ford would sell you the proper piece, anyway - the listing they show that was updated in their lates CD catalog is probably only available for purchase as part of a rather expensive kit that isn't even applicable to your model.

The 5th gear "snap ring" doesn't have holes in it to use with conventional plyers. You HAVE TO MAKE SURE the 5th gear is set ALL THE WAY in place using a press, or you'll never get the retaining clip on all the way. I had this problem, and chipped a tooth on the driven 5th gear (on main shaft) attempting to press it back on, into position. It's a pain, but it's where the correct press accessories come in

Is the ring broken?? If not, you can reuse it. It's not a snap ring in the sense that it has holes.

I found a used one that i no longer need. If yours is broken, i can stuff it in an envelope and send it. It's pretty thin so shouldn't be an issue with weight or bulk. That's iff you want a new one.

I'm gonna snap a few pics of the spare ring and the new one I installed. Give me 10 mins

Ok let's try this. Luckly i had a T-5 open that i was rebuilding.


Here's the "snap ring". It's used. Your's should look like this

Now, here is why this happens. Like i said in another thread, this ring coming loose and letting 5th gear slide off is VERY common. It usually happens after a rebuild. The rebuilder either bends the original snap ring open too far which causes it not to sit in the groove tightly all the way around or they install the new one incorrectly by spreading it open with snap ring pliers WAY too far. I usually install them by tapping them down the shaft on the grooves. This is why you shouldn't reuse old rings as they need to be spread to be removed. They sometimes bend open so far they don't seat all the way when reinstalled.

I would just go to Ford and get a replacement part. The T-5 is used in 2007 V6's still and i don't beleive that part has been changed. You can have my used one if you want, but i recommend getting a new one and making sure it's fully seated so this doesn't happen again.

yeah thats the ring. i guess it isnt broke. i thought it might have had holes in it like a snap ring.


it has some grooves on teh side close to the 5th gear. like it wasnt seating and banged on it until it fell off or something

it looks as if i can turn it around and use the good side.


so ford would have this part?

and i havent got a hold of lester gear in tulsa yet, its sunday and i bet ther are closed.

Ford should have it. They still use the T-5 in their 2007 V6 Mustangs.

As far as i know, this part of the trans has not changed.

You might have to tell them a newer Ford trans though, especially if the tech is clueless and says something like "too old we don't have it anymore". In that case ask for one from a '98 or so V6


I'd highly recommend a new one. Your's has already popped off once, so it may be spread open too far from when someone tried to previously remove it with snap ring pliers.
