This is a T5 in a 1994 Cobra. It only pops out of first gear, and whines pretty badly through the other gears.

If you put the tranny into 1st gear while still rolling, it won't pop out. If you put it into 1st gear from a dead stop, it will pop out.

If at a dead stop you put it into 2nd, and THAN 1st, it will not pop out of gear.

I did the search, most people pointed to synchros and block rings. That would be covered under a standard rebuild.

But others have suggested a bent shift fork, which would not be covered under a standard rebuild.

What do you all think? I'd hate to have it rebuilt and still pop out of gear.

I would guess a damaged shift fork. Seems like the slider can move around, depending on how you engage the gear, which would suggest the fork problem.

Yea that sounds right to me... Get a basic rebuild kit and then ask the shop if anything else is needed before they proceed with the rebuild. They will let you know if you do. A good shop might even keep that stuff in stock....But you wont know for sure until its apart so dont waste money buying things that you MIGHT need. Kool?...

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ or http://www.ddperformance.com/index2.htm for parts

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

Hanlon also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. If they are out of stock see http://cartapes.com. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.
