I was headed down to get gas and for no apparent reason it stuck in 2nd gear. I have never had any problems before. No hard shifting, no noise no nothing. It's the three-speed manual transmission that came out in the car. What can I try to get it free? I have tried rocking the car and moving the shifter but no luck. Any ideas?

Thanks

I can't drive 55..........

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Check your linkage. You may have to pop linkage off and click each gear into neutral etc. Do you have a Hurst or stock shifter? You may need a rebuild kit. Pretty cheap and easy.

First thing I thought of was the Sammy Hagger song Can't drive 55

It's the stock shifter. Can I get to the linkage through the top?

UPDATE: It's fixed

I crawled underneath and manually shifted it to neutral and everything started working again.

Thanks ttoney

Better find the problem and cure it. It will happen again.

I hate 2nd gear starts when you have tall gears behind it.

That's true, I had this same issue with my 2nd gear in my Toploader - and I ended up getting a new hurst shifter as the old one was worn badly. That helped quite a bit, also check your shift linkage like suggested.
