ok assuming my tune is good and my a/f rartio is good like my tuner is telling me it is and i have no exhaust leaks because i took it to my muffler guy why the heck is my exhaust so strong and smell so bad that when i pull up to the light it stinks up my car and u can smell it on my clothes ... oh and i have to shut off my a/c or heater at a stop light because it sucks it through the vents ... i cant take it anymore please help i cant even let my car idle around the house because the wifey gets mad about the smell ... any suggestions is it because the cams or because the o/r h pipe ... i dont remember having this issue on my other stangs...

thanks in advance

thanks for the fast response .. i was wondering about that i just dont remember my fox bodies ever smelling that bad anyway do u think some high flow cats will help and if so how much sound will i loose from my exhaust

The lack of cats is the major thing here. The cams' overlap is also likely letting a little bit of unburnt HC into the exhaust at idle which is not being taken care of because there's no cats.

Q: What exactly are you smelling? If it's a rotten-egg like smell it's being caused by sulfur dioxide which results from using gasoline with high levels of sulfur. You might try changing the brand of gasoline you run when the current tank is nearly empty.

It's your h-pipe. Either have some hi-flow cats welded in or buy a new pipe with cats if you can't stand the smell. Hi-flow's won't hold your car back any, but it will quiet it down a little.

I smell mine just about every time I come to a stop for more than 5-10 seconds. My exhaust is dumped over the axle and just floats up into the trunk and into the cabin... it doesn't bother me and smelling like exhaust is manly as ****...

Yup, it was noticeable in my car the first month after I swapped in my first OR pipe. Car was a little rich, now I only catch a whiff if I'm engine braking or driving hard, and it isn't that bothersome to me, and I have a convertible. Your car has cams so, because of the tune, or lack thereof, it may be running a little rich than normal, which is compounding the fact that you don't have any cats either.

Catalytic pipes are awfully expensive, so unless it bothers you enough to buy a pair of cats and have them put on, I'd say either deal with it or get the cats..

Thanks guys it really don't bother as much pulling up to a light because it is only a few seconds but I hate that it comes in through the vents when the AC or heater is on that sucks ... I checked the plugs they actually look like my car is running lean they were grey ...and if I do get some hi flow cats any suggestions .. oh and I do think my tune is not right because my car surges and still dies on me but my tuner insists its because the cams are not degrees ... I'm starting to think its BS

I get the exhaust smell on me from my fox with an O/R H pipe if it runs for a little bit in the garage, even with the doors open. buy yourself a magnaflow catted x pipe and be happy, put one on my wifes 01 and love it.

If it's running lean it's not going to smell like gas. If it's running rich it will smell like fuel.

You said the plugs were gray... what shade? When the car is running lean the plugs will be white, or white and ashy. Gray, as long as it's not light (close to white) is fine, as is a brown tint.
