Car bogs down when hot

If it's a really hot day, my car will be really slow when I first start moving. It actually feels like the car is in third gear, then after a few seconds it will kick in like normal. It's always like that after it sits for a bit. The only thing I have done to it is just a K&N air filter. Any ideas with what's wrong? BTW, it's a 2002 5 speed. Thanks

No, I added the K&N over the winter, and this has been happening I think siince I've had the car. I can't really remember, I think I had the problem last summer too. The A/C isn't on either. The car is off, sits for a while, I start it up, back up fine, then when it goes into first it's sloooooow, then it just kicks in and I move.

4.10's will solve that poroblem.
No it won't! ...It sounds as if he has a legitimate problem. Can't we try and help him rather than spitting out crap like this?
Could be a number of things mafiaman...
dirty or clogged fuel filter and/or injectors
dirty air filter
clogged EGR valve
bad gas
vacuum leak

Does it idle OK? Does it hesitate when you rev it while in neutral?

It idles fine and revs fine, it's just the first few seconds in first gear when the car first gets going. I'm gonna change the fuel filter soon, I've had it sitting here for a week or two, so I'll see after that. The air filter is clean, although my driveway is dirt so it gets dustier faster. I doubt it's bad gas, cuz it happens all the time, and I don't think everytime I fill up I get bad gas. I'll change the fuel filter first then go from there.

replace your TPS(throttle position sensor).... Im not sure how bad your bogging is, but I have had that problem before, and it wast the TPS, althought my bogging was alot more drastic.

good luck

I gotta assume he knows how to drive (do you?). I am with twogts4us. Sounds like a legit problem, and he gave you some real good options. Fuel filter problems generally rob at high end and not down low, but I would pull it anyway....a cheap fix.

Let us know how that helps.

Did you recently clean your K&N? Could you have used too much oil on it and coated the MAF wires or temp sensor? If so, BINGO! The coated MAF wires would not see the increased air flow and fail to add fuel until you really get going.

If so, let me know, and I tell you how to clean them. Don't touch it unless you know what you are doing.

I haven't cleaned the K&N yet, I've had it on for 5,000 miles the most. And to clear things up a bit more, this only happens when the car is first started in first, not after I have been driving a while. I could pull out of the parking lot, it will bog. At a light I will stop, and it's fine. It's not after every stop. And it happens in the summer only, not in the colder weather, only when it's in the 70's and higher.

I think it is with the MAF. Problem with a used car is you never really know what happend before you got it. Hey, mine was used too.

Let's think about the quick, cheap fixes. You could replace the TPS for about $25. But, I would think you would get the problem all the time if the TPS was bad. But, it can't hurt and it's a cheap fix. Since you are insistent that it happens when the weather is warm, I am leaning towards an intake related issue such as the MAF. Most likely, the previous owner had the same problem. And, you probably don't have a stock MAF, do you laying around?

Try cleaning the MAF. But be VERY careful. One false move, and the MAF is toast. I don't want to be blamed for anything. But, I have cleaned mine and it worked just fine.

Pull out the MAF from the housing. Don't touch the wires! or set it down. Hold it in you hand to keep it safe. Pour some rubbing alcohol over the sensors. Wait for it to dry completely and put it back into place.

I think you will want to reset you computer by disconecting the battery especially if it is dirty. Wait about 20 minutes which will also ensure that all the alcohol has evaporated. Then start it up and see what happens. A Ford tech told me you can use a q-tip with rubbing alcohol and gently clean the MAF wires too, but you have to be real careful.

bog down

if no check engine lights are comming on I would start with the gas filter just to be sure as one bad load of gas will start problems, you should invest in a tester, I picked up one $119 shipping included...dont have the site but a guy posted it here..... changing parts without knowing if there bad will drive you nuts and most times you dont just get lucky....is the motor really getting that hot? as the 4.6 late models have a pretty decent cooling system....how many miles? change your anti-freeze use the ford-chrysler pink stuff is for aluminium, mix it 50-50 with distilled water....make sure the electric fan is comming on at the right temp....look for any loose wires ....give it a good once over......good luck..........

It's not a used car, I've had it since day one, I'll do the MAF last for now, fist thing I'll do is the fuel filter. The car has about 22K miles on it. Today when I left work, I backed out of my space, put it into first, then pushed the gas down half way, it had no power, then I left a 15 foot mark of rubber behind me. When I pulled out of the parking lot it had no problem. I usually let it sit for a minute or two and rev the engine, but it always does the same thing. And it's always when it sits for at least an hour. I'm stumped.
