There are ways to circumvent what your Dad did, but that's the point (if he really wanted to keep you from driving, he could. I think he's hoping you'll take the higher road).

I'd sit down with Dad and work it out - you realize you did something that wasn't really cool, so apologize and get straight with him. If needed, make things right with the gift recipient too. Hotwiring your car at this point will just exacerbate the situation - not a nice thing right at the Holidays.

Just MHO.

And at this point, I personally won't help you hotwire the car.

I hear ya man. FWIW, you seem to be a stand-up guy. You noted that maybe taking the scooter out wasn't the best idea (even though you paid for it) and you can step back and see where your dad is coming from (even though you might not agree with him). That's stand-up in my book.

We've all had disagreements with our folks growing up, and many times we really were correct (parents are foulable and do sometimes kick the proverbial dog). But if we live under their roof, we kinda gotta deal with it; not that it's correct in our perspective.

I was speakin from experience (and I was a pretty decent kid, I hope) when saying that just getting both your folks (if applicable) together (or your dad alone) together for a chat after dinner will probably yield far better results and oh-so-much quicker than just letting it go or taking the car out (you can bet it will get worse if the car is driven). If you have to take a lump for it, so be it - it's their rules. It takes a real mature young man to be able to do that (as you'll find out later if you haven't already, when you're married, being right isnt always what matters - keeping the peace can be better). I'm sure I'll get flamed for that but it's how I feel (we can know we're correct inside - that's enough for me personally).

Knowing the little I do about this situation, it's the route I'd try. I didn't mean to be on a soapbox but it seemed like a situation that was relatively-easily fixed now (vs. taking the car out and really having your folks really have a reason to be ticked). And because you seem level-headed, I just thought I'd share my unsolicited opinion. When folks see a their son act in a stand-up way (as they probably would if you sit down and discuss the situation), it can change things real quick in their minds.
