car crapped on the hwy

I was on the hwy yesterday and all the sudden my car started to choke itself until the point it wouldn't run. It sputtered and popped until nothing, now it'll give a hard effort to start (it wants to) Just passed smog, new midpipe. New dist/ign/coil. I THINK I noticed lower than normal oil pressure right when it started to crap (full of oil now, no leaks)

took out the o2 sensors, nothing except sputter & die

could it be MAF? ANY help would keep me from blowing this thing up

Could be the maf, mine acted the same way when my maf went out. Does it kind of start then die?

hardly call it starting, but yes, a sputter then nothing

Could be something in the fuel system like the pump or filter.

could be really bad gas-maybe water my friends does the same thing but it runs fine with the mass air unplugged try that. are all the wires fully connected?

long shot..... but my car did the same thing late one night. after about an hour in the dark i realized that the wire harness on the distributer came loose.

GOOD LUCK!!! and let us know what you find.

Mine did the same thing when my maf was bad. try to find one to borrow and see if it works.

Sounds like a fuel problem can you hear you fuel pump turn on?

My car did the same thing. But always took a while to happen unless it cooled for ages. It turned out the air injection tube for the cats had disconnected so the cats were plugging up and would then air out enough to drive some more.

thanks for all the response everyone

I'm going to go disconnect the MAF and see right now
It's got a new diz and I checked the connections there. I have a brand new fuel pump and it primes, also fuel sprays from the sh. valve when attempting to start. I took the O2's off and the same stuff happened so I'm guessing the cats are not clogged (& they're new)

It sure feels like bad gas, but that must be the shi++iest gas ever to do this damage unless someone poured water in...

well, tried with the MAF unplugged. Still a sputtering attempt and then nothing, can anyone else help me narrow this down please? Could this be critical damage here w/out leaks or grinding metal or anything?!

if there is a check engine light on i can check it for you at the shop but it really does sound like bad gas or maybe someone poured something in the tank? how long has the new distribitor been in? how many miles on your timing chain?

that does kind of sound like there is a foreign substance in your motor, because right after you put seafoam in the motor and the car dies if you try to crank it back up it will take like 20 seconds then will sputer and die. you might want to change the oil and see if that helps any

i also just had another thought, maybe its a bad, or a couple of bad injectors

Can anyone tell me where the critical vacuum hoses are so I can check? Also, how hard is a fuel filter change? I'm goin crazy here...

i dont know what ya mean by critical.any vacum leak is critical and will cause the car to run like crizap.look on the drivers side towards the firewall you will see where the vacum tree is trace all the line w/ the motor running. listen for any hissing noise from the lines.your fuel filter is located just infront of the fuel tank, it should ony take a few minutes to change,but ya need a fuel line disconnect tool.good luck

ok, no visible vacuum hoses off, but the car doesn't run so I can't listen for hissing. Think the oil pressure being lower than usual (but in the norm range) could have something to do with it?

Could the fuel filter keep it from running all together? When trying to start, fuel sprays from the sh. valve too

ok if you have a vacuum leak you are going to waste all you gas, it might idle funny but it should start, if your fuel filter is clogged it will also feel kinda funny depending on how dirty it is, you DON"T need a fuel line disconnect toll for the filter, when you buy a new one it comes with new clips so just break off the old ones and a 8mm socket is all you need, i would check the voltage going to your injectors, maybe could be an ignition module or a weak ignition coil but you need a voltmeter to check that, let me know what happens and see if i can help.

start pulling the plug wires and make sure they are sparking. even though the distributor is new, doesnt mean it cant go out. mine went out on me yesterday and pissed me the hell off. good luck
