Car Dying On Freeway And Power Loss

I am a little confused why you say "weird 1000-1200 idle". Are you saying it idles up and down from 1000 to 12000? What was your car idling at before?

Let's see...fuel pumps usually work or not. Perhaps the small rubber hose in the tank connecting the pump to the hard line has a leak or the clamps are loose.

Fuel filter is a great start.

Perhaps you pressure regulator is bad or needs adjusting if adjustable.

Check all fuel lines for kinks....those lines from the pump to the filter and return line may have broken from their retaining strap and be laying against your exhaust pipe and melted....mine did this.

What about ignition? On both of my 5.0Ls, around 170,000 miles, the Hall effect sensor in the distro got weak and gave hesitations and some herky jerks. I've had the high mileage stock plug wires actually burn through the main coil wire. The burn was hidden under the rubber boot. Of course, the TFI is always a PITA.

Your surging idle may be related, or may not. There is a huge checklist for the idle on this site somewhere....includes stuff like clean the EGR, check TPS voltage, check EGR sensor, clean MAF, clean 10-pins, clean IAC, clean all around the throttle....etc., etc. Usually low dollar stuff, just busy work.

You're thinking Chevy's. Not Fords. Ford fuel pumps are known to get weak before they actually go bad. Lot of Ford fuel pumps will start whining or humming before they take a crap.

Sounds kind of crazy but mine was doing the exact same thing and I had no idea what could do except that it was a fuel problem. Changed the fuel filter and found out there was water in the fuel. I added some dry gas and started getting gas from Sunoco w/ 89 or 93 octane and I never had the problem. You have to watch where you get the gas, with the prices of gas today, I've actually seen some stations with garden hoses in the underground fuel tanks. Sometimes when there's water in the fuel the car will do that.

Very good point. With gas prices rising ,there will be more stations diluting the gas to make a profit. The E85 and other ethanol blends will soak up water like a rag and not separate out like conventional gasoline and water do.
