Car is pinging.. WHY?

i am only running 5 pounds of boost and to stay safe, i retarded the timing down to 8 and gappened the plugs at .035

Starting yesterday, 1st and 2nd gear i can rip through till 6K rpm and shift.. as soon as i hit 3rd, it will ping bad up top and so will 4th gear... the question is.. WHY??? i only have 8 degrees of timing and theres no way i should have to retard it anymore and i am running 93 octane gas.... Any help??

stock fuel system witht he exception of a vortech FMU..... I thought timing is the only reason the car will ping? is that right?

vortech told me witht he a trim, the stock fuel system can be used, but i need an FMU

with 5psi it should work with a bone stock engine and fuel system.


chek your fuel filter...

I had a pinging problem with car. N/A and stock....

I was running bosch plugs...

I went with the ford motorcaft original plugs and it fix the problem.it never pinged again.


The bosch was probably to hot.

ill take you up on that.. the guy at the store didnt like bosche plugs but those were the only ones they had soo i took em.... Ill replace them tomorrow and see what happens

Oh man you are going to blow your car up. You need to get a new fuel pump ASAP. Lets just say I tried running my car with the stock 110lph cobra fuel pump and by the looks of my electronic fuel pressure gauge (something tells me you dont have 1 of these) IT WAS NOT GOOD. Luckilly nothing bad happened, but I didnt go womping it around the place either. Your wimpy 88lph GT fuel pump is asking to blow the car up. Get a 255lph not next week, but tomorrow.

well I agree with the stock 88lph fuel pump. it was barely adequate for a stock motor. In fact, I am not even sure I would run a stock motor on that pump considering age and mileage. do either a 190 or a 255 and get rid of that bosch crap. I had those in my heads and within 3 weeks I had problems beside pinging. the plugs basically crapped out in 3 weeks. swapped to motorcraft or autolites and never had a problem again.

Although that was without the stroker. Right now I do get pinging but I figured out my distributor is screwed up. something inside it isn't working right so it pretty much sets timing like it is at WOT all the time. I need to swap it out but since I drive a toyata avalon most of the time I'll have to get at it this weekend.

I would be willing to bet the pump and plugs is your problem. maybe an autolite 24 might be better for you since it is one heat range cooler than stock 25's and the 24's are great for nitrous and what I run. I am not a blower guy so I can't promise but you might wanna ask the power adder guys.

also, the a trim should be good with the stock fuel system but but that is a stock system that is assumed to be in perfect working order. remember that our stock systems are already over 10 yrs old, so you could have a 19lb injector or two (or 8)on its last leg.
