your 60's are low, should be a 2.2 at least.... your mph is hella slow, should be mid/high 90s, depending on the day/launch, and your times are slow (duh, that's why you started the thread ) should be a mid 14 w/ you driving... as to why, I call it driver error, but that's just me j/k

Ummm.....In the dealers defense, you cant just cut and paste the flash into the pcm. When you get a pcm from Ford, it is blank. You must transfer the flash from the old pcm to the new unit. When you do that, the part of the flash that controls the trans will be transferred along with the pats calibration. The tech's have no control over this, it is how Ford does it. Before you go hating on the dealers, understand that there is only so much they can do. The techs are not allowed to do anything outside of what Ford lets them do. Your best bet is the aftermarket.

actually...

i knew about the cut and paste deal...

what i know tho is that they can download the pats codes from my old computer and upload them to my new computer... then they need to reflash my new computer...

this is something no dealership is willing to do, just because they think i don't know jack ****... it's been done before, and i am not going to believe anyone who says that it can't be done

about the swap... i pretty much pieced it all together... almost... i got a bunch of parts from a guy in vancouver, but i ended up using just the transmission and driveshaft. everything else i had to buy/upgrade

cavallo, that's what i ran as well, but that's before the car's sex change and before the IRS... i doubt the IRS would make my car go .5 sec slower... there was a GT vert on the spot running 14.5's... and i have a 2.5" catback! dunno if he was stock, but it sure seemed like it

anyway... i may have been a little harsh with the hating on ford dealerships, but so far i've had very VERY bad experiences in more than one case... for example: my brother's focus was in the service for 3 weeks just to get a O2 sensor replaced... in the process they replaced the entire wiring harness on the car... meaning they took out the dash and everything... now the dashboard is flickering and the HID headlights are not as bright and even they were flickering, also much more things are rattling...

i'll post some more when i remember it

This is where you are about 1/2 right. (I am an ex-ford drivability tech, I know my way around the WDS). You can transfer the pats, but why? If you can flash the pcm correctly in the first place, you can erase the pats codes and flash it fresh and your set. We have done it before for people that have been thru divorce and such, to keep the spouse from stealing the car with a "good" key. The problem is you have no way to flash the pcm for an auto if you cant "borrow" the flash from an auto car in the first place. And even then, most of the time you will have trouble making it take. I have had to do this with a Focus in the past, and it is a pain. You will literally spend all day chasing your tail, just to find out it cant be done. The pats is an easy fix. The flash is the hard part.

I dont think you are fully getting what I am explaining. The flash in YOUR pcm is for a manual trans. You cant dump it into a box and tell it that its an auto. You need a calibration FROM and auto. If you flash your calibration to the new box, it becomes a manual pcm again.

The pats thing is done after the pcm is flashed. You simply go thru the security access (10 minute delay) and erase the stored keys. Then, program new keys (they can be the old keys, it doesnt know as the codes were erased, but you need 2 or more) by cycling them in the ignition. Thats it. Easy.

If you go to a dealership, ask to talk to a drivability tech, and explain to them what you are doing. I think they will be much easier to talk to and will work with you more than the service advisor that has no training, or his manager that just sits behind a desk. You will probably pay an hour or more for the service.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to swap out the pcm? Unless you are getting a DTC, the only major difference that I can think of is that a manual trans flash keeps the rev's up a bit during a shift.

hehe...

I went from an Auto to a 5speed tranny
right now i have an automatic computer running in my car...

i also have a manual computer in the trunk...

i think that was the confusion...

anyway, so you're saying that i can just go up to a drivability tech and ask them to change the codes to the ones that are on my computer at the moment?

no downloading/uploading of flash needed? that seems TOO easy! I will try on Friday... hopefully I can find a cool tech

Yes.....they can delete the stored pats codes from the old pcm and from there you can program 2 new keys. They dont have to be new keys, the pcm will think they are. You dont need the old pcm for that.

If you find a friendly tech, explain to him that you want him to swap out the pcm and then have him program your keys. I am sure he will do the job, I would estimate about an hour of labor.

hehe i am getting a nice check engine light as well as OD light flashing... also surging and bucking... normal symptoms of a transmission swap that hasn't been completed yet

Well, try the dealership and see what they can do for you. Hopefully they have a decent tech, if not, go to the next closest dealer. As long as you explain to them what your doing, and that you dont expect it for free, they should be more than happy to help.

why not just buy everything a stick car comes with... wireing harness/computer and so on and just swap it out? The concept seems simple... there must be something I'm missing

He could, but it would be the long way around it. He would need the keys, and therefor need to re-key the doors. Kind of a waste. Flashing the old keys is much easier. Like I was saying, the only hard part is getting the automatic flash in the pcm, but it sounds like he has that under control. The pats part is easily fixed.

Thats why we dont care about simply reflashing the Pats keys, cause the alternative sucks! I am 50% sure your pats module is in your pcm. The other 50% says its in the Hec module (instrument cluster "hybrid electronic cluster"). I cant remember for sure on a 98. Either way it is simple to have flashed, but you have to get the car there some way or another.

No, I worked at Damerow for a couple years and then went to Suburban. Both great dealerships, but nothing like working at a speed shop. Have Matt get Kieth to do it for ya. I believe he had a NGS, ( I doo too, but mine is broke )he may be able to do it on the side, never know. Save you a tow to the dealer if it pans out.

On a side note, Keith owns my first Mustang, a white 91 hatch.
