Car turned off while driving

I have a 2004 V6 Mustang 5 spd manual, it has about 62k miles, as I was driving on the highway the car turned off and the "Service Engine Soon" light came on, I pulled over to the side of the road, I then put the car in neutral and tried restarting it and it came on and this time there was no "service engine soon" light, it hasnt given me any problems since but i was wondering what that meant? any advice and 411 is greatly appreciated. I noticed that since it is a 5 spd,and you stated that the engine shut off while you were driving down the highway,were you in neutral at the time it shut off? Did this occur when you depressed the clutch? Sorry,I'm just a little stumped at the moment.Anytime the clutch is engaged and in gear,as long as you're moving,your engine is also running.Just trying to figure out how you stalled out.You noted the CE light came on afterwards.This would be normal.Anytime the key is on but the engine is not running,the CE light will be on.Take note of this every time you go to start your car.This is a normal diagnostic function of the PCM (internal OBD II computer).Hence when you restarted it,the light went off.

Now assuming it did stall on you,there must have been a reason.Was it running rough? Has it ever hesitated upon pressing the gas pedal? Did you recently run into a lot of ground water? Any bit of info helps.

There are very few reasons that can cause an engine to die completely as you're driving, and even fewer that would permit it to restart- without even a trouble code.
I would just keep driving it and see if it happens again. If it does, it may be an intermittant ground, intermittant coil pack failure, fuel line blockage, etc. Hopefully you'll get a CEL soon to point you in the right direction!

the car was running normal, no strange sounds, no contact with water in months (except car wash), i did notice a smell that smelled like burnt plastic weeks before but i dont know where it was coming from, it was like a silicone glue smell but that was about 2 weeks before it shut off on me. thanks
