I've had my shifter (automatic - 67 coupe) out of the car for a while as I was replacing the bushings - I just plugged it back in, and now the car will only start in neutral (not in park).

Anybody know what's going on? Have I managed to do something bad to the neutral safety switch, for instance?

Thanks.

i would double check that neutral saftey switch, cause you know it can't be anything else but that.......your ignition is working since it starts in neutral, maybe you pulled a wire, and since they are old they crack pretty easy...

Ha i had that problem once, i checked like every possible electrial problem under the hood and felt pretty stupid when i realized that my shifter has a false click into park. I have to like put it in park and push it forward again so it clicks. Doubt thats your problem but yeah...

The switch prevents the car from being started if it's not in park or neutral. If it is not in adjustment, it would not allow it to be started. For instance, it it was connected via the wires, but not bolted down and just hanging, the contacts would be open and the car wouldn't start in any gear.
