car wont get out of its own way

I just bought an 01 GT convertible, is it the gears and weight that make this thing such a slug? It pulls nice , but wont break the wheels loose through 1st (w/o dumping the clutch) and wont allow me to swing the a$$ end out when pulling out of an intersection. Traction control is turned off. My previous 91 GT 'vert w/ roughly the same hp (a few bolt ons, and 3.55s) would break the wheels loose if I rolled along in 1st gear and stomped on the gas, and love the intersection slide. Will 3.73s solve this? Thanks.

you'll just have to add some mods then. 3.73s would add a nice pull, but since you have a conv. i would go with 4.10 gears. these should definately help break the tires loose. my car spins the tires big time if i punch it in 1st gear and that is with these crappy 3.27 gears.

3.73's will definatly help, but 4.10's would be perfect. Do a search and you will find millions of posts about 3.73 vs 4.10's The conclusion is if you stay N/A then go 4.10 else go 3.73

I had the same problem, my 1980 firebird used to swing the rear around better. I did full exaust and ported the intake plenum and the pulleys and now it's getting there. I still haven't done gears yet i am waiting to see if i need to after putting the kenne bell on

If you have an auto you have 3.08's so that will be one reason for the lack of wheel spin. 5 speeds have 2.73's or optional 3.27's if I'm correct in assuming those were on the later model Stangs too. Gears will solve you 'problem' but will hit your pocket in tires.

Thanks for the input, I am leaning towards 3.73s b/c it is my daily driver, and will see limited track use. Still a lot of reading to do on the issue...

I had the same problem with my 01, the way I fixed was I bought a 5.0.

You just don't know how to drive it. That or you got a friday 4:00 PM car. Mine gets fishy if i stomp on teh gas. HAs done so since it was bone stock. I've taken a few turns sideways as well.

get some of the full length flowtech headers on there and offroad x pipe , and catback , gears and lose some weight out of that car , then it will buck up .

Not true - both autos and 5-spd's in 99+ come with 3.27 gears in them from the factory.

Sounds like a factory freak to me. those are really good times concidering your mods and the heavy drop top factor
