Car wont shift out of park.

Please help... Automatic that wount shift out of park! Ive had some problem in the past getting it out of park but just had to wait a few minutes to get it out of park. now it wont shift out of park at all. Dont have the car right now but if you have some suggestions please leave them.

There's a sensor on your brake pedal. It's broke.

My wife's '03 is now doing this. What is the name of the sensor, is it user-replaceable, and can I only get it at the dealership? TIA

There should be one or two sensors on your brake pedal, closer to the firewall and mounted to be depressed when your foot is off the brake. They control the cruise control, brake lights, and your shifting ability. They are easy sensors to replace and I would recommend getting them directly from Ford.

Edit: Forgot to mention they will be higher up, towards the top. The button will look like that in your door jam...

If it's not that check the shifting linakge where it connects to the position mudual on the driver side of the tranny. The bolt should be in the middle of the bracket holding the end of the cable to the position sensor. I had the problem of getting the handle out of park when i put it back on wrong after installing my tranny. Or will the button not even press in? Then it's the sensor

Ok, I checked it this afternoon. One of the wires, coming out of the sensor, was disconnected. I pushed the wire back into the hole, and it shifted out of park with ease. My question now is how hard is it to crimp that wire back into the sensor? I don't really trust electrical tape or just leaving it pushed in there. Thanks for everyone's help!

The bracket looking one. Not the cylinder one.

Also, if it's broke, your brake lights won't come on. You can put your hand under the dash and push the sensor in to shift it out of park if its your only mode of transportation.
