Hey its me again. I have a 650 CFM Holley DBL Pumper Carb. I used to have a smaller Holley on the 69 Mach 1 but it was so chewed up I couldnt figure out what it was. Car would start but ran rough. And flames would shoot out the Carb. My wife calls the car Dragon Bit*&,anyway. With the new carb:
Engine tries to start.
Fuel is in the line 1/2 inch above fuel pump. wont reach carb
carb bowls are dry.
Put fuel in Carb (.5 oz) and she'll kick over, then die. Did this 12 times.
Do I need a larger fuel pump.
Fuel pump is original.

Sounds like your fuel pump is shot. You most likely do not need a larger one, just a good one. A good pump will shoot fuel accros the room. The flames out the carb sound like a timing issue. Be careful with the flames. I would check the timimg manually before trying to start it again.

or you might need to prime the carb, you said you have put in gas in, but fill both bowls. My car with the pump off will run for at least a minutes off the bowl.

Have you checked fuel pressure????

Sounds like a bad pump to me also. But i too agree about the timing being off or at least crossed plug wires. What motor are we talking about, 302, 351, 390 , what? Firing order 302: 15426378. all others : 13726548 You also might check the "rock" filters in the fuel line inlets on the carb. They could be plugged with crap if you don't have other inline filters.

I'd disconnect the fuel line near the carb and crank the engine. You should have gas pump out of the fule line, so have a small container ready to catch it.

If you don't, it's either a bad fuel pump, a clog in the fuel tank "sock", or a loose cam eccentric that drives the fuel pump. I'd work in that order from most likely to least likely.

Well all you did was spap the carb. The fuel pump was working then so not now. Maybe the "in" line to the carb is not connected tight causing the pump to suck air. The backfiring through the carb does sound like timing. But, I have a lot of experience with bad distributor condensors. They are a $6 cylinder mounted on the side of the distributor. If they go bad it will seem like the plug wires are 180 deg off. Backfire through the carb and sometimes leave a flame above the carb.

Flames are definitely a timing issues. Believe me I had my right arm bald, and the right side of my head shorter than the left from this, and snapping the throttle.
