Hi everyone,

My engine had been running fairly well even though the carb probably wasn't adjusted perfectly. The car ran strong and had little to no smoke out the exhaust. I changed my stock fuel pump to a Holley not to long ago. I recently noticed what seemed to be my accelerator sticking, but after checking the linkage and return spring, I figured it to be ok. I thought maybe it was carb related, like something mechanical was sticking (the butterflies maybe?). I have no experience when it comes to carbs. After driving it twice with the accelerator problem, I tried to cold start it one day and it fired right up and stalled after about 20 seconds. After trying to start it again, the engine wouldn't turn over and it acted like the carb was flooded as I could smell gas even though I did not pump the gas pedal. I have tried to start a couple times since and while it will start, it runs really rough and will stall if I don't massage the gas pedal. While I attempt to keep it running, it looks as if the gas mixture is really rich.

Can anyone give me rough instructions on how to tune my edelbrock #1406? I know there is a a/f screw and an idle screw in the front. Which is which? I just want to get the car running well enough to drive it somewhere to be tuned correctly. Would changing my stock fuel pump to a Holley affect my carb calibration? Does anyone know why I was having the accelerator problem?

Sorry to be long winded! Thanks for any help.

I say this often but it helped me. Make sure that your new fuel pump has the proper pressure or get a regulator. Too much pre4ssure wqill bleed by the floats.

Do you happen to know what too much pressure is for my Edelbrock or 600 cfm in general? My Holley mechanical pump runs 6.5 to 8 psi and 110 gph.

Edit: I just read on Holley's website that my fuel pump doesn't need a regulator?

Sounds like you've got too much fuel pressure. It's pushing the float down in the bowl and flooding it. Even though Holley says it puts out 6-8 psi, doesn't mean thats what your carb needs. If it's too much pressure, it's too much pressure. Install a regulator and adjust it down till the problem stops.

And a pump with 110 gph is WAY too much flow for a carb. My 331 stroker gets along fine at WOT with 3 carbs and a 30 gal/hr pump.

Thanks D. Where can I find a regulator? I guess its just a gauge that is in-line?

The owners manual for the 1406 carb says a maximum of 6.5 PSI. Recommend you change fuel pumps or obtain a fuel pressure regulator. I use the Edelbrock 1490.

I'm using a Holley regulator on my 331, Summit Racing's part # is HLY-12-803. Adjustable from 4-9 psi.
