magnaflow is exactly what you want

I'd go with Magnaflow. Great-sounding muffler - civil at idle/cruise, really rips at WOT, and no drone. However, I'm not a fan of the tailpipes on their catback system - those tips are hideous, IMO.

If I were in your shoes, I'd piece together my own cat-back. It'll cost about the same (or less) and you'll be happier with the results. Score a pair of Magnaflow 2.5" offset inlet/outlet mufflers, then separately buy some 2.5" flowtubes and 2.5" Dynomax stainless tails, and throw it all together. Great sound and great looks.

I've been re-using my Dynomax cat-back tubing on several exhaust configurations ever since I ditched the Super Turbo mufflers. They're still in great shape and look good, so I'm thinking next year (or whenever I have the funds) I'll probably wiggle off the Pypes Violators and throw on a set of Magnaflows; I love the sound of the Violators at WOT, but I must be getting old (or the muffs are getting louder) because they're a bit too noisy for my taste at idle and cruise, don't wanna piss off the neighbors too badly (especially since it spends the weekdays parked in an old folks' neighborhood).

I've got the full aluminized Bassanni system (BX series) with catted X-pipe and cat back muffler system. It sounds, looks and flows great. I highly recommend it. I'ts a little bit lound, but in a good way. Its not at all obnoxious. Very deep and racey sounding.

Might I throw out MAC flowpaths.

Have them on my Fox....had them on my 04.

Both were catless.....both were/are mean as ****. Not loud, but deep and muscular.

Same here. I cannot get with the tips on the Magnaflow catback. My Dynomax tails are 15 years old and, despite me changing mufflers more times than I can count, they are in good shape. The tips still clean up very nicely.

I currently have Magnaflows on both cars but eventually I will be going back to a chambered muffler on my '90. I miss that sound.

F Magnaflow...WAY too mellow.

Flowmaster Force II's are kinda quiet unless you are running an off road H in which case they sound killer

MAC Flowpath FTW all day...sounds good with cats or off road x pipe...

lol Mellow they are. I switched to Magnaflow during a stage where I wanted to tone the car down but I miss the old sound (3-Chamber Delta Flows). I like the Magnaflows for my daily though.

I had MAC's in teh Notch when I first bought it. They droned like a mofo. The exhaust note wasn't too bad, but the drone totally killed my interest in them. Not only that, but they were beginning to rust through ... which is pretty pathetic out here in Arizona, as there's cars from the 70's and 80's still rocking their stock exhaust systems.

I can see how Magnaflows might be considered too mellow by some because at idle and cruise, they're deep and VERY mellow, whereas most chambered muffs tend to have the same tone all the time (and, more often than not, they drone). The only exception might be Flowmaster Delta-series muffs, which Frankenstang has in her Capri - they have a good tone behind an off-road X-pipe, but they're not that loud, and their flow characteristics SUCK because the exhaust has to pass through a friggin' maze to get from one end to the other. Even the Dynomax Super Turbos I had tended to drone a little bit, which was really annoying considering how they were otherwise almost as quiet as stock mufflers.

Straight-through mufflers tend to have a variable tone, which is very nice for DD cars. However, even for non-DD rides, I'd think they would be preferrable because unless you're one of those "look at me" types that wants to advertise your car's presence the entire time the engine is running, the only time folks care to be loud is when they're romping on the throttle. If you just want full-time obnoxiously loud, go with a set of SLP Loudmouths or some Dynomax Race Bullets, both of which are basically the same as running straight pipes - no tone crafting whatsoever in those.

I was really, really hardcore sold on Pypes Violators for a long time, but I guess I'm getting old or something, or maybe the mufflers' sound has changed over time. They're still perfectly fine behind a cat'ed X- or H-pipe, but behind an off-road crossover, they tend to be a little too loud at startup and mild throttle input. They don't drone, and they're not God-awful loud at idle, but unless you keep the RPM's under 2k, it's kind of hard to avoid attracting attention ... which you don't want to do if you're cruising by a cop or visiting relatives that live in a community full of old retired folks. It would be one thing if I had a beastly H/C/I motor that would be loud ahead of ANY exhaust setup, but since I'm running a stock long block and intake, it just seems silly to be this loud. Revving it up or going WOT, sure, I wanna hear the thing open up and roar; otherwise, I oftentimes wish my car's exhaust would just STFU. They have a straight-through design like other mufflers, but instead of a perforated core it has a fluted or louvered core tube and little to no packing material inside the muffler - before I put mine on, knocking on them sounded like you were banging on the side of an empty propane tank ... BONG! BONG! (whereas most other muffs will just go THUNK THUNK) ... and they were really light, no mass to them whatsoever. I think what little packing WAS in mine has long since disintegrated over the past few years.

Some similar straight-through alternatives to Magnaflows would be Hooker Maximum Flows or Dynomax Ultra-Flows, which are pretty much identical to each other but don't have the upper-RPM "rasp" that Magnaflows have (especially behind an off-road X-pipe). These mufflers have a "break-in" period, actually, as I've found that over the course of about a month they will louden up a bit, but they stay about the same from that point onward. I was almost pissed when I first bolted on a set of Hooker Max Flows and they sounded so quiet most of the time, but after awhile, it opened up and finally sounded right.

You guys saying Magnaflows are mellow, do you have them on a stock car or what? When i'm rompin on mine it sounds like the gates of hell opened up behind me.

I also can't stand their tail pipes, but they would look great with a Cobra bumper.

Macs are probably my second favorite with Spintechs a close 3rd.

Go with Bassanni BX - you get the cool sound of Flowmasters and the performance of a straight through muffler plus the 3 inch SS tips look awesome.

Just installed the Dynomax Ultraflo. I love it. No drone, aggressive under throttle, rest of time pretty stock sounding only a little bit more so to speak.

Only Dave could write that much about exhaust.



It'll all sound good. And no matter what you decide, you'll probably love it. Think about it this way, you'll never know what you might be missing!

I've always thought the Magnaflows sounds great on your car. Maybe the carb set-up makes a difference but it definitley has a more pronounced "snarl" to it. When I say mellow I'm speaking more in terms of normal driving. It's fine for my daily since I'm not looking for attention but for my hci '90 I want to get back to something more aggressive. At WOT the Magnaflows do wake up, I just don't care for the tone. Frankly, I think the aluminum BBK "X" pipe is another reason why my car doesn't sound as good. I plan to upgrade to a Bassini or Dr. Gas at some point but that is way down on the priority list. lol

Well, the way the motor ahead of those mufflers is set up plays a HUGE role in how the exhaust sounds. I know how lame Dynomax Super Turbos sounded on my notch with a fully stock motor, but I've heard the exact same mufflers on other cars with fully built motors and they sound EVIL. Also, running dumps makes damn near ANY muffler sound good - I'm sure even the stock-style turd muffler on my '84 would sound kinda aggressive if I went out there right now and hacked off that stupid little 4-banger tailpipe - so it also depends on the size and style of tubing you put after the muffler. Exhaust tip size is part of it (why else do ricers run those absurdly large tips?), but tubing length is also a role, as well; again, Dynomax Super Turbos with stock tails sound lame, but the same-side inlet/outlet version of those same mufflers set up as side-exits, they sound WAY different.

As far as mufflers on a stock Fox EFI 5.0, IMO you pretty much can't go wrong with most of the straight-through design mufflers like Magnaflow, Violators, Ultra-Flows, or Max Flows.

They make aluminum exhaust pieces? Interesting. I guess they would be more lightweight, would dissipate heat better, and would never rust, but ... seems like it'd be too soft a metal to use for exhaust, given the conditions. (Flexing, road debris/scraping, etc.) Or did you mean aluminized exhaust? Just curious.
