i am considering between purchasing an off road bbk x-pipe, and a bassani x-pipe with cats. i plan to mount these with bassani midlength headers, but is there really any benefits of having/not having cats? sounds? performance?

legal issues dont matter, i could care less haha

Heck yeah there's a difference! OFF ROAD! The best improvement is in the sound! But you'll gain performance, especially with forced induction. No Mustang should be without an off-road H-Pipe.

no cats!!!! i have an off road h pipe and there IS a difference...maybe its not A LOT but there is a difference over a catted pipe. and the smell (eveen though it isnt good for you) is intoxicating. i like the smell...maybe im just weird oh yeah, an off road h pipe will sound totally badass with your dronemasters

I know that smell.....IT ROCKS!!...but I don't get it with my O/R X.
Mine kinda just smells rich. Not like those '80/'90 5.0's.
Maybe once I put my predator tune up there it will.

My wrx gained like 30 wheel horsepower after I took off all 3 cats. It smelled pretty bad though, hopefully the Mustang will smell more like a Harley. I love that smell! Oh also you should get an offroad pipe cause its cheaper too. Those cats are expensive.

Wouldnt an h-pipe flow better than a X pipe because the pipes are basically strait through and dont cross over like an x. I dont really know to much about this stuff, but to me it looks as if an x pipe would create more back pressure.

From what I have read from this forum, H-pipes give more back pressure, therefore more low end, less high end. X-pipes = less back pressure, more high end less low end. If you can't decide between cats and no cats, buy the bassani x-pipe, the 5 piece system. It has removable cats, so you have both, cats and no cats.

no cats, there is that big wiff you get when you stop at a light kinda quickly. Big difference in sound, but its all about the mufflers to. I had my Bassani O/R X with stock mufflers and didn't make much of a difference, soon as i got my stage 2 flowmasters WOW! I set off car alarms. X-pipes you do feel the car pull harder on the highway WOT around 3grand. I blew a bullett away in my 01GT.

cats are too restrictive **** 'em go o/r you'll make more power and that's what counts. not to mention the catted mid pipes are more expensive than the o/r ones. You'll probably have to do it yourself 'cause some muffler shops won't touch that stuff cause it's illegal.

The only reason Im planning on a catted midpipe is that I dont wanna have to change it out yearly for inspections.

i went with catted x because in my county the state troopers will look under sports cars to check for cats....1500 dollar minimum 1st time offense

the power difference is minimal on a mild setup....i've made over 400hp with catted h-pipes on 302's

if you go with an off road x pipe on a stock engine it is over kill. 4.6s react much better to catted x pipes. they dont lose any low end power or torque and gain nearly as much top end power. they run much more efficent and you dont have to **** with MIL's. they are a little more pricy but you dont have to worry about removing it for every e-check.
