Changing brake pads: Do you turn the rotors?

If the rotors are not scored, should you have them turned for good measure anyway? Or would it be a total waste of money?

There are only two reasons I know of to turn the rotors:

1. The rotors are scored
2. The runout is higher than spec (they typically will pulse when you brake)

When you are doing the pads it's only one or two more bolts to remove the bracket and rotor. I would have it checked regardless and have them turned if need be!

F.Y.I. I had my factory rotors turned recently with new pads and they warped again within about 300 miles. I will be getting Brembo rotors off of Tirerack.com soon to take care of the problem permanently

No, don't bother. If you have problems with vibration just buy new rotors, grease slide pins, and torque everything down to spec.

You should turn them. Part of the new brake pad bedding process is for the pads to deposit a braking surface onto the rotor. Also turning them removes glaze build up from the old pads. When I get my rotors turned they always look so nice afterwards. And it is really not all that expensive. Paint any surfaces on the rotor that are prone to rust while you are at it and have the rotor off.

You should, but i have done it without it. I think for max performance, you should turn them so the new pads can bed into the rotor

If you're not changing pad compound re-bedding isn't an issue, the brakes are bedded in after a few stops anyway.

If I was going from say OEM pads to hawks I would get my rotors turned, but if I was going from OEM pad set A to OEM pad set B at the MAXIMUM I would just scuff the rotor with a scotch bright or mild steel wool.

Where do you guys go to 'get the rotors turned'? To the brake shop/dealership?

anytime I change pads I get them turned! And they shouldn't warp with only one turn after 300 miles. Most Shops like Meineke, or any tire dealer will have a lathe.

I decided not to get the rotors resurfaced. I read stuff that said one side effect of resurfacing rotors is you have less disc to absorb the heat, which makes it more susceptible to warping. That to me was a bigger (-) than just having a smooth surface for the new pads. If my rotors were scored, then I would've replaced them.

I didn't put the new pads on yet. But I still decided it wasn't beneficial to have non-scored rotors resurfaced.

Sounds good, I gave this some additional thought and when I turned my GT rotors they did look nice buy they got warped again after just 3 months. Perhaps due to material removal making them thinner as you said...

You can also get new Brembo blank rotors from TireRack for $47 each.

The rear GT rotors are $35 each.

I just ordered a pair but they are backordered

I already have the Brembo 13" front rotors and liked their quality

I think it's time for me to change out my pads on my car finally. Will be a first time project for me.

But then I realized that I hadn't put anything new on my car in over a year and I just got a tax refund.

What do you guys think of this kit here with the Brembo rotors?

Worth it? I can't see myself spending much/any more than that, but I'm hoping for something fun to do that I will be able to notice.

I'd go with the BuyFordRacing ones. They sell the OEM Cobra brake kits to put on GTs.

Thanks. Looks like the same kit but cheaper.

How much better are the cobra brakes vs the GT? Is it significant? Only noticeable in racing type situations?

They are MUCH better. I notice it the most when i come off a freeway and am braking down the offramp. They don't fade near the end like GT brakes.

I had a couple close calls too where i'm thankfull i had the 13" brakes.

Plus they look cool inside the wheels.

I bought the Mach 1 kit for $310 from buyfordracing.com and painted the calipers red
