Changing Fuel Pump

i am gettting ready to swap out my stock fuel pump for a 190lph pump. is there anything i should have on hand or replace while im doing this? or any tips?

I lubed the fill tube with WD-40 really good first,and my new pump (Installed yesterday) came with a tank seal,clamps,and new tube for the pump to the housing. Also,clean up really good on the top of the tank so the crap on the tank doesn't fall into the tank when you remove the pump.

Word of advice make sure you gas tank is clean when changing. Contaminated fuel ruined my first pump so a year later had to change a second one. A radiator shop cleaned the tank for me.

An extra set of hands would be nice for the job

Remember to run almost all the fuel out of the tank.

Use the brass punch and a hammer to tap the retaining ring off.Brass and wood don't make sparks.

i probably shouldnt say how i removed the retaining ring
but yes, use a brass punch, the last thing you want is an explosion. a friend of mine "blew himself up" cutting up a gas tank (he was 17 and didnt think it through very well)...he still has particles of fabric from the carhart jacket he was wearing in his neck.

I've always heard if your gonna do any cutting on the fuel tank to fill it with water first. I'll be doing this when I have to cut these tanks in half to be able to drop them at the scrap yard.

When I did mine I had to drop it a 2nd time because I didn't know to replace the grommet and subsequently ended up leaking fuel every where after I had it done. The first time I followed the write-up on American Muscle to a T, which took me about 6 hours total to do. The 2nd time I did it, I threw the write-up away and did it my way and without doing the pump (which I found to be the easy part the first time) I had the grommet swapped and everything back up in 30 minutes. When I did it my way I removed the passenger's side rear wheel, unbolted the tank straps, and pushed the tank off the fuel neck with my buddy under neat to catch it. I then used vaseline on the grommet to get it in easier. Also, I would recommend buying new fuel clips for the pump as they tend to be very brittle and break easy. And of course make sure your tank is as low as possible.

What grommets are we talking about? Ive done two fuel pumps so far and I don't remember changing any grommets. I used the bbk kit and it came with new hoses clamps filter and the seal. No grommets were replaced.

the easy way would be to get everything new, gas tank, sending unit,etc. put everything together, drop the old tank & install the new one.

Sunday,I cut a rectangle hole out of the trunk floor so I could swap the pump a LOT more easily.I went to Lowe's and bought a 12x12 steel panel,made a custom cover for the hole I cut out,put a bead of sealant down,installed the cover,and put 7 small button head screws in to hold it all together,re-installed the carpet,done.I can change the pump in 10 minutes now.The hole took 5 minutes to cut out.Once the carpet is installed,you can't even tell anything was done.At first I didn't want to do it,but afterwards,I'm glad I did.If for some reason,somewhere down the road,the pump gives,and I'm a ways from home,no worries,no hassle.

the locking ring assembly is so rusted i can't budge it loose. its been soaking in penatrating oil for hours. ive got 2 tabs left on the locking ring to tap at, the other 2 broke off on the first strike.... if i break the other 2 off then what.......? im really not wanting to purchase a whole new tank.

got the locking ring off, but its in pretty bad shape. can you buy the locking ring assembly and replace them? ive searched the web and couldnt find anything about it.
