changing rearend gears...

I want to change from stock to 355 or 373 i have aod in a 93 vert transgo shift kit the motor is stock but slowly changing k&n fender mount 65mm t/b msd dis. coil wires eibach lowering springs koni adj. equ/l headers o/r x super 40 flows b&m hammer 17in cobras 245x40s intake and heads are comming soon $$$ what would be good set up ? and should gears be my next mod??? thanks

i dont think 355s are quite enough for an AOD. i would say 3.73 MINIMUM. I would try a 3.90 set or maybe you could consider 4.10s

The highway rpms are like 1-200 apart from each gear so yeah...you might notice a loss in mileage when on the highway for long periods at a time. But i think the performance gains will far outweigh the mileage loss.
your intown milage shouldnt change, it may even get better, you will get to use your O/D a little more instead of that 3rd- OD-3rd OD shift all the time.

A little less strain on the motor also. your car will actually use the gear to move and not luggin it around with a hghway gear like the 2.73s.

In my opinion: @ least 3.73 with an AOD. I'd go deeper though...

The trend seems to go like this
5.0:
manual = 3.55
auto = 3.73
4.6:
manual = 3.73
auto = 4.10

Most seem to be happiest with ratios of about this and these ratio combinations are a good compromise between mileage and performance increase.

It doesn't only depend on $$$$$.....much more depends on your skill level and whether you have all the tools needed to do the job correctly the first time. If you have to have it redone with another set of new gears because the first set got chewed up it will cost you a lot more $$$$ than it will having it done by a pro in the first place. BTW....there are many good gear companies but most people that I come in contact with recommend using Ford gears or FRPP. I'm sure that there must be some reason why so many people use them. I got some myself for an upcoming gear change. Good luck with yours.
