Changing the mach 460 head unit...quick question

Ok, so i am just replacing the head unit with another one because this one is busted now. I have a quick question though. I know the shifter bezel comes off just by pulling up on it alittle hard....however, how does that plastic piece where the head unit is....the silver one....well on my car, come out? Is there a specific spot where i grab and pull...or are there screws? I want to start tonight, so a quick response is appreciated!!

im not really sure about what your talking about, but yea the shifter bezel just pops out, and if i think i know what your talking about, the piece above it has 2 10mm bolts..but you shouldn't need to remove any trim piece if its anything like my 460..you need the special ford tool you can find at autozone.. it secures into the square holes on each corner of both decks, and you simply pull back and the radio should come out.

After you remove the shifter bezel just garb on to the bottom of it and pull up and out. Its sorta hard to get the vents out but they will just pop out.

its a 'Radio Removal tool' and it should say 'FORD' on the upper left hand..some may say toyota..or honda..etc.

2002 to 2004 mustangs have 7mm screws holding the radio in. i think 2001 might also, no ford keys needed.

The 01 or 02+ Mustangs dont need the removal tool to get the stereo out. Just pull up the gear selector bezel and if I remember right there are two screws behind it that hold the radio bezel in place. Then you just give the bezel a good pull and you can get to the four screws (7mm I think) that hold the stereo in. If you are going with a new deck I would highly reccomend replacing the speakers and bypassing the stock amps as any good aftermarket deck will way out power the stock equipment

Yes everything is still stock...i have in my basement a complete mach 1000 sound system, but i dont know if i want to put everything in. The reason i am replacing the head unit is because it has a crack in it. Someone put something in my car, didnt secure it, and when they hit the brake it came flying forward and hit the headunit head on. So it cracked the screen. And honestly, it pisses me off everytime i look at it. I guess if something doesnt look right in my car, it makes me mad. hahahah

Yeah the ones under the package tray next to the speakers. One dual mono block amp and a four channel for the 2 1/2" full range speakers. The Mach 1000 has four amps if I remember right.
See the problem is the stock speakers suck and if you put in new ones it wont sound right because the door 6x8 are mono subs playing 300hz and down and the little speakers only play 300hz and up. Same with the rears. When putting in an aftermarket deck you want to bypass the factory amps so you can send the full bandwidth to the new speakers. Really you should do a high pass @ 50 to 100 hz to the 6x8s and run a seperate sub. The 6x8 will handle alot more power and sound better if they are not trying to reproduce lower frequencies. Thats why I like Pioneer decks so much because they have all the crossover eq controls built into them. I even left the factory 6x8 subs in the rear deck becaus the Pioneer can bridge its rear outputs and run a low pass to drive a sub. Works good till I can afford a real sub

see- why'd you do that? now i'm confused. So if i put in JUST a new deck- will it sound better or worse..

Better. And get a Pioneer 3900 or higher, best deck for the money. I paid $70 shipped for my DEH-P390 Premier. It has a 200 watt amp, high/low electronic x-over, a 3 band quasi parametric eq, sat radio controll, I-pod controll, MP-3, two aux inputs, remote, title display, BMX compression enhancer and just sounds great. I highly reccomend one

Ahh ok.. so i looked at my rear speakers, and they look like amps underneath them, is that what they are? amps? And if i get new speakers for the rear, what do i do with it?

Yep thats the amps. With new speakers I would run new speaker wires from the new deck to the new speakers, easier than just bypassing the amp if you dont know alot about wireing.

Sorry for a late post, but I thought I'd add this:

You don't NEED to get the Ford head unit removal tool. If you take a wire coat hanger (or equivalent) and make 2 U shape pieces with the straight parts about 8" long you can easily remove your head unit that way. Just stick the hanger into the holes wiggle it around and eventually you'll get it. It took me maybe 30 seconds.

you don't even need to go through all the trouble of bypassing amps and what not. all you need to do is put bass blockers on all your highs/mids. then run your lows (rear speakers) through your rca outputs. so hook up your rear speaker wires to an rca cable (you'll have to cut it of course) and that will send a low frequency to your amps which will give the stock sound. and i personally think the mach system sounds good. but of course everything sounds better with aftermarket subs.
