I am just in the process of trying to get the alternator wired up to the regulator properly. The car used to have a voltmeter, but this has since been removed and I have found that the stator wire from the alt to the reg has also been removed. At present I can run another wire from the alt to the reg box no problem, but the connections at the reg have me confused. They are labelled from the top down where the plastic connector fixes ...

top ... plastic tab missing (so no letter) and also no connection
second ... (A) which is at present going to the hot side of the solenoid
third ... (S) which is going to the main disconnect green/red wire .. to the indicator bulb I presume.
fourth ... (F) which is going by a white wire to the alt field connector

In my mind (and trying to decipher the wiring diagram) the green/red wire should be on the top connection and the stator connection on the alt should go to the third (S) connector.
Is this correct?
When I put a meter on the battery with the motor running it was reading 17 volts or so and one supposedly good battery is now flat.
Any help appreciated.
BTW there is an earth on the reg box.

The top connection where the tab is broken off usaully reads "I" for ignition.
I came across the same issue a number of months ago, overcharging.
As I remember, the plastic connector which plugs into the regulator was from a different year auto, and was not pinned correctly for the regulator.
The green /red wire is almost ALWAYS ignition, so I would agree with your idea.
The earth on the regulator is the mounting screws. At times there is an external condensor which serves as a noise suppresor

Load up the alternator by turning on the fan to HIGH, headlights, etc., and see if the voltage remains at or above 12v.
Then unload it by turning everything off, and see if it creeps up to 14-15v or so.
Glad it's working for you.
