Cheap Performance Help

dude unfortunately, nothing comes cheap on our modular 4.6s. mods are expensive and they produce minimal gains unless you go with forced induction which is even more expensive. much like you i got my gt when i was a senior in high school and i was short on cash since i didnt have a job. so i had to wait around a year til i found me some work and i barely got my gears just yesterday lol. im barely 19 and i go to college full time. but yea, if you want instant results youre better off saving and going for gears. that or you could always get one of those tornado intakes from ebay. :shrug:
 
Take off the intake air restrictor, change the plugs, clean MAF, reset PCM do some other preventative maint.

When you have changed every fluid in your car, then consider mods grasshopper.
 
If your car is a manual, get a shifter. They are cheap enough and give the trans a more solid feel. Then yeah, gears and a midpipe.

I'm just 18 and have all the mods in my sig + some more on the way... yay for working while going to college! haha
 
My suggestion try and buy used parts. I've been pretty lucky in that regard gotten barely used parts for 50-70 cents on the dollar of new.
For things you will feel. Gears, OR mid, and power adder Can you say NITROUS. I can. :D
 
I'll sell you a superchips max micro tuner for 200 =/ not that cheap i know. Christmas? lol

As far as mods to help u out, the midpipe definitely. Heck I have one of those too. 50 bucks plus shipping. You could pull your upper intake plenum off and smooth it out. I opened mine up quite a bit and noticed a difference.

You failed to tell us whether your car is a 5spd, or an automatic. If it's a 5spd, then a new shifter would be a good idea. If you have an automatic, a transmission cooler and Jerry mod shift kit would be a good place to start.

Since you've already got the mufflers swapped, and you're running a cold air intake, I would probably suggest a mid-pipe and a upper plenum/tb combo. Other than this, gears would be a good idea. If you can't afford both the plenum and throttle body, then no worries. The stock 65mm throttle body flows plenty, but a good aftermarket plenum is a good idea to go with that cold air kit.

As for mid-pipes, if you have to worry about passing smog inspection, then you need to get one with catalytic converters, or you'll need to swap mid-pipes when it comes to time for state inspection. I know here in Va. we have to get our cars inspected every year. Its a PITA.

Check around before purchasing ANYTHING. Sometimes, you can get buisnesses to compete in terms of pricing, and then you can get good deals on parts. Some good places to check, are with the authorized dealers on the Corral Forums. I suggest registering as a member there, and checking out what they got. They tend to have monthly specials on parts, so keep your eyes peeled. Some other good places to check are the following:

Mods for the 4.6 aren't cheap no, but I think the 4.6 actually responds to mods pretty well, so unless you are saying you don't get 50rwhp a mod anything he can really afford should give him a decent amount of gain. Biggest gain really is in the exhaust, the intake, gears and getting a perfomance tune.

So...if I were you I'd get a mid pipe next, they aren't too awfully expensive and you might be able to find a nice used one for a good price.
 
Dont get used gears..It woud suck to pay for them and then install them and have them be a set that were chewed up.
I suguest removing the snorkel, K&N filter, Shifter, gears, midpipe. Nitrous if you can afford it and be safe with it.

Why don't you explain to him how to remove the "air restrictor" from his CAI? I'm sure he'd want to know.
 
I was about to say the the kid informed you he has a cold air kit, and not the stock induction tubing, so then there is no need for him to purchase a K&N air filter or remove the snorkel, as the snorkel/silencer and stock air box are gone.

I agree that doing a tune up on a car is a good idea if it needs to be done, and it should be done before anything else. This is also why I stated if he has an automatic, now would be the best time to invest in the J-mod shift kit and transmission cooler, as both of these will greatly extend the life of his transmission.

I agree with BullitStangV8 concerning the gears. With as cheap as gear sets can be had for today, there is no sense in buying them used, and run the risk of them being damaged. Just buy them new, and be sure to buy a good brand like FRPP or OEM Ford gears. I've heard good things about motive gears, but no personal experience with them.

Change the plugs? That is not performance, that falls in the basic maintenance section.

No need to clean the maf unless it is dirty and causing a code to be thrown

Why the heck will you reset the PCM? No changes have been made to the cars tune so it is completely pointless. Heck the car will run a tad rough at first until it cycles and relearns everything, which will prolly freak the kid out because he thinks he did something wrong.

Where do some of you all come up with this garble? That is going to do nothing for his performance and really not needed.


Ok if you have a 5 speed, I highly recommend a decent shifter for it. That will prevent griding and increase the life of your shift forks. A Steeda or Pro 5.0, or UPR makes a nice shifter. Then from there I would get gears 4.10's or 4.30's if you are staying naturally aspirated. A good pair of Subframe connectors will go a long ways too. You can get all those for under 650 bucks if you shop smart.
