Cheapest way to 270+ hp

I would say gt-40 heads, new upper and lower, a larger tb, larger mass metter, get rid of the smog/ac, put some shorties, an o/r h-pipe, and maybe a kit....

You will be close, spray a small saft shot, and you will be there....

N/A I would say 97+ explorer engine swap with a good aftermarket cam, long tubes, 24lb injectors, 73mmC&L maf, modded explorer throttle body, U/D pulleys, electric water pump, O/R midpipe, and a good catback.

Cheapest though is a good tune up and a 75 shot of N2O not to mention it's alot less work.

Buy a complete Explorer engine from a junkhard...usually around $600 depending on mileage. Swap in a good cam with at least .540 lift, then personally i would opt for selling the intake and buying a Wieand Stealth intake and a 600cfm Holley (now c'mon you guys saw that coming...lol). That would save you the money you'd spend on the throttle body/maf and CAI not to mention you wouldn't have to worry about injectors or tuning.

Granted you won't get as good mpg as the EFI setup and blah blah blah (pleeeease don't derail this one into another carb vs. efi fight...we've heard it all before lol) but anyways you said the cheapest way to make HP, not make mpg :D

I'd say you could have it all finished for less than 1k EASY. I've seen explorer engines as low as $350 (of course if you wanna just use your engine you can usually score just the heads for $150-200)....then the Stealth intake can be found used for as little as $75 (what i paid for mine...already ported) and i'd just buy a new carb so you can rule out any tuning/running issues...that'll cost you about $300-340 for a 600-650 Holley double pumper. Then if you can score a good used cam, you could probably finish this engine up for $800 if you score some cheap parts.

well I can say that the gt40p heads a good set of springs, you CANT use the stockers, good cam choice, and an imploder intake, nice maf and tb, with mac longtubes ( fit the p heads nicely ) and you have a nice little cruiser engine, I had this setup for about eh 6 months, and had a blast with it lol. cheap as well!!!

I was thinking about getting a tmoss ported intake then having the heads ported getting a custom cam and some new headers. How close you think that would put me?
The GT40s might be cheaper than getting the stockers ported.

If you port the stockers, I would also toss new springs and such in them, and maybe some larger valves. Might cost the same as the GT40s, but E7s can run hard (I have some decent E7s on my car, which are unported actually). Need the supporting mods like MAF, TB, exhaust, etc...

Just spray a 150 shot...............
That's why I recently bought a new engine.......

fixxored!!!

anyways, ive had about every intake known to man for the 5.0 and, the gt40/exploder intake is great for a stockish 302. I have a t-moss right now on my vert and I really didnt feel anything when I swapped it on  it works a little better than stock imo, my gt40p engine with a b cam, and this intake pulled oh so nicely, it would burn teh tires so dam fast in 2nd, look at bloodreign's beast and when he hits 2nd in his vid, mine would go up in smoke, and I didnt have a good t5 so it would grind, so I had to baby it to 2nd, it also has 2.73 gears!!!

also got 22mpg in town!!!
