Check engine light and sensors?

Ok well my gf brought her 95' gt into the shop today to get a freon refill. And while it was there she had the check engine light checked. Apparently the mechanic told her that sensor #1 and #2 was bad, and they are relaying improper information to the computer causing the car not to work right. He was pretty vague on the details. But it is going to be about 300 bucks to fix. What sensors might he be reffering too?

i've never heard of a #1 or #2 sensor. All sensors have specific names. Go to walmart, and pick up a $32 code reader, pull the codes yourself, and go from there. Mechanics always try to rip you off anyway.

Unless you know it to be a trustworthy shop I'd be leary...Sensor 1&2 don't me jack...weird he didn't state a specific sensor, as in TPS/IAC/IAT/TFI to name a few..Is the car appear to be running like ass??
OBD1 can't be checked at my local AZ...they only have the OBD11 reader...unless other auto places can do a 95...Most do 96 up as it's OBD11..
Myself I would have that doublechecked...

The car appears to be running fine. I drive it all the time. It could probably get better gas mileage but thats about it. She had spoken to her uncle about the car and who is a bus mechanic and does have lots of automotive knowledge and he said its possibly the o2 sensor. When she asked the mechanic if thats what it was all he replied was with "Uh, its the #1 and #2 sensor. Its going to cost about 300 to fix".

Your call on that one...O/2's could be sensor 1&2 to somepeople depending how they got or read the code?? Personally I wouldn't pay 300.00 for the 2 to be replaced...
Buy some Bosch's and do the install or maybe scam the Uncle into it.. You can bang them out on a set of ramps no problem...Just put the PB Blaster to em the night before...7/8" open end will do em right up or you can buy the O/2 socket at AZ or the like reasonably cheap...

He was probably refering to the O2 sensors... At the shop I work at our scanner reads the O2 sensors as O2 sensor 1 bank 1, sensor 2 bank 1, sensor 1 bank 2, sensor 2 bank 2.

No need to pay them $300 to change the sensors, which is probably what the codes were for, they just wanted to make an easy $300 off of you so they didnt specify which sensors.

That's what she said at the shop. She asked, "Oh, is it the O2 sensor?" and that's when he gave her the run around. She does happen to have a cold air intake, which her uncle said may trip the O2 sensor. He said there was nothing to worry about. Is he right? Like I said, the car has been running fine...

Uh.... I've never heard of a cold air intake tripping the O2. They are a LONG ways from each other in terms of travel through the engine. I'll agree with Matthias, buy a code reader from walmart or wherever (midwayautosupply.com has the one with the LCD screen for $32) and pull the codes yourself. It comes with a real handy book that lists all the codes in better detail than "Sensor 1" or "Sensor 2" If it is the O2's, they don't cost near $300, and they are super easy to replace.

If the codes refer to the O2's, they could mean one of two things.

Either A) Both O2's are bad and need to be replaced.

or B) The O2's are reading rich or lean, which indicates another problem somewhere else, and the O2's are doing their job.

You don't know until you check the codes yourself, and do some diagnosis.

How many MPG do you get? If it's below 16 in the city, you should replace the O2's. That should help your mileage.

Better yet be your own mechanic.
