Check your oil filter before you install it.

I bought a Motorcraft oil filter for my new 02GT at Auto Zone. I went to lube the gasket before installing it, and guess what? It didn't have a gasket. It didn't look like it had been removed. I don't think it ever had one. I took it back and exchanged it for another one, but what a pain to have to do that in the middle of an oil change.

I always have an extra for my car and truck sitting on a shelf in my garage. Now I know why I do that.

"Best Practice"

When ever I change my oil, I lube the new seal by rubbing it against the seal on the old filter. It makes sure that I have a seal on both filters, and not one at the bottom of the box, or still attached to the block.

That's the first thing that went through my mind. I could see some ricer pulling it off just to mess up a Mustang. I guess that could have happened, but it really didn't look like it ever had a gasket on it. I will check them before I buy them from now on.

I cant stand the idiots at Autozone. The best one I have seen so far to me was I was installing a buddies shocks on their 95 GT and it was lowered. So we were going to get the foxbody struts and it went like this.

Me- Yeah can you price me out a set of front struts for a 1993 Mustang GT
Employee- Is that a 5.0?
Me- No it has a chevrolet 502 motor in it.
Employee- The look on his face
Me- You asked the stupid questions not me.

park it in my bay and leave it for a few days and you WILL have a junkyard 5.0 and I will have a terminator in my GT

BTW I doubt autozone is at fault.. read my earlier post, we have had a few filters come out of the box without gaskets.

Strange s___t can happen, one time I went to change oil, the rubber
gasket from the old filter stuck to to fixture then I put the new filter on,
not knowing I now had 2 gaskets, ............ when I started the car up
it was leaking oil all over the place.

Had that happen to me

Half a gasket on there so it looked like it was there but looked like it was cut or rotted out.

Here is a pic of the oil stain still in my rock driveway.

Did that one before on my sis's eclipse. Old gasket stuck to the engine and i forgot to check. I assumed it came off with the old filter. Put on the new filter, started the engine up and spilled about 3 quarts of oil everywhere

here's a good one for you... I found a quart of "Esso" brand motor oil in the trunk of my girlfriend's father's car. That is the old name for Exxon, and it hasnt been sold in probably 20 years.

Another good Autozone story - my buddy works there (he is actually good with cars), some guy came in looking for a serpentine belt for a 1992 Volvo. My friend asks him "what motor" and the guy replies "well, its a 302 Cobra motor." Haha I guess you see a lot of crazy stuff working in retail, at least that is a good kind of crazy

What I do when I change my filter is just take a few drops of oil and rub them along the seal to make sure it's completely coated, and always inspect the old filter to make sure the gasket came off. Works like a charm

Ditto! You can thanks the Autozone employee's for taking it off.
Autozone will never get a red cent from me because I wouldn't
shop there if it was the last auto parts store on plant earth.
