Choice for heads. Either quick GT40ps or wait a while for Edelbrocks.

K, I have a chance to get some GT40ps from a local source for about $260. They are in good condition and have been rebuilt. My other choice is to save up for a set of Edelbrock Performers, which I can get the set for roughly $850. I want the edels, but it might be awhile before I can throw that cash out. I still have the tranny to do. So how do the gt40ps compare to stock and the edels? Valve sizes?

GT-40's are good heads as are the Edelbrocks...personally I'd rather wait & get the Edelbrocks.

Both heads can get you into the 11's with the right parts but the wieght savings & the amount of further potential out weighs the need for "instant" gratification.

I would wait as well. The benefit of having aluminum heads will be worth it.

Plus if that is what you really want, then you would be settling for something you don't really want.

I will sell you a set of Edelbrock RPM's with 1.90/1.60 valves so you don't have to dish your pistons. They also have 1.6 rockers. I want $900 for them.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say get the gt-40's. You can always sell them later and they'll be a nice addition for the time being. Thats assuming your doing the work yourself though. If your having a shop do it, i wouldn't pay labor twice.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know the gts required different headers... I'm not going to do that. SKip nay thanks for the offer, but I've still got to save up for them. On the performers, would there be any necessary mods to go with it? I thought they were just bolt up stock replacements.

You are talking about GT40-P's off of the explorer right?

If you really want the edel's wait. There is no reason to get something you only half want. Yeah the gt40 P heads require different headers, the normal GT40's do not.

WAIT. The Edelbrocks will vastly outflow the gt-40p's and you will also shave a good 50lbs off the front end due to the fact that they are aluminum. I was in the same situation as you when debating on heads. It was either get a set of gt-40p's off my friend for $300, or save my money. I chose to save up for a couple more months and believe me when I say it was totally worth it. The P heads would be a nice upgrade, but I think you will regret not getting the Edelbrocks if you choose to go with the P's. Do yourself a favor and wait.

I'm in a similar situation myself -- with some nice iron heads available, but I'm going to wait as well.

I've run aluminum heads in the past, and even if all other things were equal, 50 pounds off the front makes a big difference.

Keep in mind on your headers too. Not sure on the p's but you have to make sure you have the correct ones. I have the performers and they rock! Good Luck!

On a side note.. anyone know how much the stock hood weighs over a fiberglass one?

You don't need no other mods with my heads. Use stock bottom end, cam, headers, and even intake if you must they won't shame you. All new everything on them except valves, springs, and retainers

I think the stock hood weighs around 50lbs and a fiberglass one weighs under 20lbs.

Considering the fact you need different headers... well that would probally turn me away. Don't forget about the costs of gaskets, new head bolts, as well as time and effort. However for that price, you could always re-sell everything when you do swap.
