Choice of exhaust

Hey guys, I recently received a 2001 v6 stang as a grad. present; I am ecstatic as you can imagine. When I first got it everything was stock and I did not want to change anything... I mean anything. Three months later now, I have bought 18 in rims for it, and a cold air intake is on the way. My question to you all is, in the most economical way, how can I make my stang sound more like a v8. I know it is impossible to mimic exactly. Can I simply add a single MAC flowpath or 40 series flowmaster? My budget is like 250 with install. Thanks guys.

i was the same way with mine and you can see where that led, anyways i thought the same thing trying to figure out what to do with my exhaust but all the exhaust places i went said the new muffler wouldn't fit under my car because it was too big so i came up with the idea of just cutting out the muffler and replacing with just pipe, because the flange in the middle of my exhaust pipes had broken before and i liked the sound of so i had this done and it sounded good and i went from 22 mpg average to 26 mpg. now i did keep my cats. so i would have enough back pressure but enough space for solid flow.

On my 02 V-6 stang, I saved up for the MagnaFlow cat-back. It has a very nice sound, about as close to a V-8 as you can get. It converts the car to dual exhaust, I also purchased a rear bumper cover from a wrecking yard that was the same color (white) that was in great shape from a V-8 car and now my car looks like a V-8 from the rear and almost sound the same. I am VERY impressed with the sound quality. My son says that the car sounds almost the same as the new Nissan 370Z, and I can live with that. My butt dyno also says I picked up a few extra HP, but that may be because it sounds so much nicer I "think" it makes more power. I do know that the fuel mileage went up a few ticks.

I was thinking of straight piping it but I really don't want it to be an obnoxious loud, though more so a mean muscle car loud. Do you think this is achievable with a single flowmaster muffler, probably not, right?

well i know with mine every dealer i went to said the super 44 flowmaster i bought was to big to fit underneath my car with out being scrapped off so i had the one dealer just replace my muffler with pipe, but at first i wasn't pleased with the way it sounded because it cracked for a couple days but now it has a smooth sound to it and it isn't obnoxious as what a straightpipe v8 would be because it is a v6, plus i left the cats on the exhaust system on it. i would have really liked to do what Bullitt347 did because my flowmaster was single in dual out and would have sounded real nice and looked nice but nobody would weld it on so that is what i was left with. if you could find somebody that would weld in a single in dual out muffler you would be closer to the look of a v8 but its cheaper to just straight pipe it. and it will sound different for a couple weks and you may not like it at first but it will get better over tie as the engine becomes use to the flow

Well I really don't care for the aesthetic appeal of dual pipes, I more want that muscle car sound for a diminutive amount of cheddar. So will a straight piped 01 v6 sound different from your's, also what do you think about a single flowmaster 40 seriesw or MAC flowpath? Thanks for the input.

will an 01 v6 sound like mine, definitely not it may sound close or similar but every car has its own tone and all depends on how it runs curently and how its been taken care of but it will be louder and it will be better on fuel and a little power but its a gamble when you straight pipe it to get a definate sound and is very hard and near impossible to get a v8 sound, but it is easier and cheaper to start with straight pipe, give it a month or so and if your not happy then you'll want to find a muffler that will give you the sound appeal. now i can't speak much on what muffler to get because i never wnet through that proccess but anything with out chambers will give you more sound than the stock muffler

Hey man thanks for the input. I think I just might try it. How long does it really take to mellow out and be ECU recognized? Also what do you think about just one straight pipe which basically eliminates the muffler?

i'd have to say close to 3 or 4 weeks for you to get the final sound but im not real sure, but do give it time don't hate it the moment you hear and change cuz it will take a little timebut i can't say for sure. and a single straight pipe is what i have because the guy i had do it did it for free but eventually i will change it and make it dual some day.

youtube.com and type in roushmustang2003 and look up the video 2004 mustang exhaust, its what i had it had a very deep tone, with a cold air intake

Does it sound a lot better, does it roar when you accelerate, rumble at idle and overall sound similar to a v8?

Yeah it rumbled at idle, it sounded like a rumble type noise, at high rpm it sounded like a pro charger whistle because of the cold air intake, but make sure you get a 3 inch tip the tip makes sorta of a difference, make sure to get the deepest magnaflow muffler there is, also I recomend the flowmaster 10 series, my brother has them in his gt wow, you will definetly be drawing attention to yourself

Does the single sound ricer or GT like? The sound I am trying to mimic is a v8 obviously. Do you think a single flowmaster 40 series without any modification (just remove and replace) would make it sound good, or do I have to actually change the pipe and tip? Dude I am looking at spending like 90 at most for this. Bolt on replacement for the magnaflow, will it work, or will Ihave to change the pipe and tip as well? Also, what is the name of the deepest magnaflow, or what is the name of the one you put on your's?

Well you won't spend less than 100 for what you're asking for, the flowmaster 40 is 75 $
To get deep sound you NEED the tip that's 20$
Installmebt by muffler shop is around 30$ and that's not achieving the sound you want
FLOwmaster 10 is 80$
Tip and installation same as above but now you get the sound you want

Alright man, so I have decided I will put a magnaflow resonator on my whip. I really do not like the idea of a huge tip, that I think is ricer. So having said this, minus the tip, do you personally feel it will sound like a v8? In addition, if it will not produce this sound, is what you are saying is thatt tip alone will make the diffrence? On the flipside, are you saying the entire pipe from the resonator back will have to be bigger in diameter?
