ok, now I bought the woofer, I got a 10" Rockford Punch stage 2 View attachment 513765 this is the 12" version, but you get the idea. It has a 4 ohm impedence, It has 200 watts RMS and 400 watts Peak and 85.5db sensitivity. Now, since I know next to nothing about stereos, help me pick out an amp to power that exact specifiations, remember only one sub, and will not break the bank, i am a poor college kid!

the 400 watts peak does not mean anything. it is the rms power that means something. as far as sensitivity that is the response of the driver, not the amp. so basically you need a 200watt rms amp at 4 ohm mono.

if you have a good quality aftermarket deck the rockford rf2002 amp will work fine (the internal crossover sucks, but it makes 200 watts rms) and only costs 179.95 at most retail outlets (best buy should carry this amp) and most likley cheaper online.

if you are running a stock deck, get a amp that has a good internal crossover, like a JL, alpine, kicker, audiobahn, or rockford power series. something with a bass knob would help on a stock stereo also.

if you tell us what deck you have we can give a better oppinion.

I have an older Sony Xplod head unit, I want to say that it is an CDX-L550X, but not 100% certain on the model number.

you can always get a amp thats rated more then the sub. Im running a 500w mono amp to a 350w sub. Here is a amp that would work good but i dont know your budget.

get a amp with a good internal crossover, your deck has only one pre amp out, and it is full range. the JL amp listed above is a great one for what you need.
