I want to a 351-C 69 mustang with SEFI and no dizzy. Was thinking Mass-Flo-System was the answer however thier kit must use a dizzy.

So back to DIY. What's the best ECM option for classic application. Snag a Ford OEM
EEC-V SEFI a system or cobble up something based on an older EEC-IV AL9 with EDIS-8?

"looking to get out of the system?"

For SEFI I want to retain the shaker hood scoop that's where Mass-Flo-System would be great as it merely replaces the original carb with a throttle body that could all fit under the OEM shaker air cleaner. Also I want a MAF based SEFI not MAP based system....Again Mass-Flo-System to the rescue. I'll be using a TUFF DAWG 351/393-C long block crate motor for this project.

However I'd really like to get rid of the dizzy unit and associated wiring clutter. And EDIS-8 looks like a very dependable ignition system. I could conceal the two coil packs by mounting them to the backside of the AL heads. Then route black plug wires forward from the coil packs down low along the black crinkle finished AL valve covers. This is where Mass-Flo-systems comes up short as there 351-C kit is dizzy only.

Seems SEFI requires a cam poisiton sensor and I guess the Mass-Flo-System dizzy unit provides spark and cam position information to the EEC.

An EDIS-8 36-1 crank gear won't provide the correct SEFI information so it seems some type of AUX cam sensor would still needed regardless of which system I would use. MegaSqurit is an option as I see they are about to release a SEFI capable version. Again would require crank signal for IG and a cam signal for SEFI!

My overall goal is to a retain the classic look and feel yet achieve a dependable performance ride with good mpg and drivability.

For true sequential AND distributorless, you'll have to go with one of the expensive stand-alone ECU's such as Big Stuff 3, FAST, etc.

If you can live with batch fire, you can go with the MSII ECU for about 1/5th the cost.

in addition, a distributor can be very reliable and still provide excellent performance characteristics. A fully electronic package is still very good

A friend of mine did nearly exactly what you're looking to do with a 351C, but with a MegaSquirt. He used DSM coils, a custom crank trigger, and a modified (cut) distributor so the oil pump would still be driven.

Then adapt a DSM cam angle sensor to it and feed the MS the signal. He said DIY right?

A little batch injection never hurt anyone.

i wonder if you could use an explorer DIS system and computer? you'll have to modify the cam sensor housing to work with a clevie but it should be doable. maybe the mass-flo guys would work with you on it? the dual plug Ford rangers also used a DIS system and some were pre OBD-II, not sure if the explorers DIS system was pre-OBD-II or not.

personally, i would just use the mass-flo with a dizzy and use an MSD TFI dizzy instead of the mallory unit that comes with the mass-flo system. the TFI ignition system is pretty darn reliable, especially if you use an aftermarket dizzy, coil and CD ignition box.

The man said he wanted sequential... it's not me you need to convince. The MS doesn't do sequential (yet) no matter what signals you feed it.

If you want to retain the classic look (which I can understand), then why do you want to get rid of the distributor? Most classic Mustangs had a distributor too
You could always paint the cap black.

If the rest of the MassFlo system suits you fine, then I wouldn't make things (a lot) more complicated by going to a distributorless ignition system.

I went to a distributorless system (EDIS 8) and won't ever look back. Better accuracy, more spark energy, more reliable, etc.. lot's of advantages and if you're handy in the garage it can be cheaper than an MSD setup.

I'm not worried about keeping a stock engine appearance. I focus on the look of a classic (from a distance of course) with the benifits of modern technology. Restomod if you will..

Are you using a coil pack setup ? I'm interested in seting up COP myself. Do you know if the MS system supports that, I didn't think it did ?

It's a coil pack setup. Pretty much the same as COP except it still uses spark plug wires. Yes, the MSII supports this. Involves the install of a EDIS module, 36-1 crank trigger wheel and VR sensor.

I thought they did. I'm looking at doing a MS system with COP.

If you don't already know: You can do this by using the MSII-extra code and modifying the MSII to have 4 ignition outputs. It would be in a wasted spark configuration tho.
