those steamers are handy! i used mine to clean/degrease the pi heads i got for my swap...after you get the dust out of your engine bay....I wipe everything down with armor all etc, this will attract the dust to it but with a quick wipe down every sat/sun will shine back up...i use the wipes in the container for a quick engine bay cleanup

How much for one of those?

Guessing a pressure washer isn't a real good idea, hehe

That'll work actually, just make sure you cover up all the electrics first

I cover the alternator with a towl and avoid spraying the MAF, battery and fuse block. Then after spraying diluted Simple Green on the engine and letting it sit for a few minutes, I take the hose and put on a low pressure attachment and hose it down. Then take my wet/dry vac, put it on blower and blow the water out. Start it up and drive around to dry it off.

I would avoid using high pressure under the hood period. You really don't need it. Just use a good degreaser and an assortment of brushes to remove the stubborn stuff and then lightly rinse it off. I have had great luck with Orange Blast but, I typically use a 4:1 dillution of Meguiars APC.

Unfortunately my motor is covered in pollen right now but, this is from the last time I cleaned the motor.

those motors are clean enough to eat off of!

I usually avoid sprayers and do the hand towel with degreasers, etc. It takes a little longer but is definitely worth the electrical peace of mind

i don't know what the steamer cost, my girlfriend bought one to clean the bathroom...i use it on the car. its a shark that all i know.


i just did a search and shopping.com has steam cleaner/vacums for 39 dollars..thats cheap

I wrote recently a thread asking the cleaning question, too. Finally I cleaned for the first time my engine and what’s around. I’m glad with the result .

How to:

-covered sensitive parts like CAI-filter and alternator
-wetted the cold engine (garden hose)
-sprayed everything with simple green (auto zone…)
-brushed where applicable
-rinsed with hose (liner too)
-finished and dried with cloth
-drove to dry
-refixed later some detached tapes

Some let their motor running while washing. The idea is, should water enter the intake, the piston swallows only small amount of water a time and not a huge quantity (liquide is not compressible therefore you may brake a piston rod or whatever should a lot of liquid being compressed). I didn’t have my motor on, because I don’t like the idea of having the serpentine belt mashing up all dirt coming of the engine while washing and for some other reasons.

Make sure it’s legal around where you live.
