Clicking when accelerating

Hey guys I'm new to this site, after extensive searching, I finally decided on a 1970 Mustang coupe a couple weeks ago for my dad and I to work on. It runs pretty good, but I noticed a clicking/ticking sound coming from the passenger side area when driving. It seems to intensify when accelerating. We thought it was maybe an exhaust leak, so we used that as an excuse to get some hedman shortys and a new dual exhaust system. Still clicking! So now I'm thinking it may be the lifters? Does anyone have any thoughts?

Also, I am trying to decide on the right direction to go with exterior styling. I want to try to stay true to the original model, but looking through Mustangs Unlimited I don't know if I can help myself. Its a red coupe with the vinyl sports roof. I was thinking about a Boss 429 hood scoop, black front and rear spoiler, black tail light finish panel, hood stripe stencil kit etc... But in no way do I want to advertise the car as a Boss or Mach 1 when that was not the original model. This may be a dumb question, but does anyone know if those were add on options from the factory or dealer in 1970 for non Boss/Mach1 models?

Is the noise the same as before the exhaust was changed? Does it only make the noise when the engine is under load? Or does it do it coasting? There are many things that make ticking noises. Try to discribe it some more. You could have a rock stuck in the tread of your tire.

Thanks for the reply, yea its the same as it was before we swapped out, it doesn't do it coasting only when you press on the gas at all. I'm sure its not a rock, it seems to be coming from the back area of the engine. When you accelerate more, it clicks more rapidly as well.

Could be a lifter or the valve lash needs to be adjusted (rocker arm), it also could be valve clatter (doubt it). You need to let someone who knows about the rockers take a look. Also double check all of your exhaust gaskets, those headers will need to be re-tightened several times before they finally get fully tight (unless you bought some locking bolts) Like mustangmutt said, several things to check.

Yeah, I would check the valve train. Take it to someone who can give it a good listen to and determine what the noise is.
As far as exterior styling, you will never have a problem confusing anyone with a coupe being a possible Mach1 or Boss. You couldn't get the Boss 429 scoop on any other car besides the Boss 429, but you could get the smaller scoop with the turn lights in it. The front and rear spoilers were probably options, but the rear one was only put on Fastbacks as far as I know. They look pretty good on 69' 70' coupes though. The bottom line is it's your car and you can do it up anyway you want.

does it sound like metal on metal? will it make this sound if you accelerate while backing up?

Is the "clicking" sort of a rattling sound kind of like marbles rattling around? It might be spark knock/pre-ignition. If so, this could be cured by retarding your ignition timing a couple or few degrees.

Thanks for all the replies guys, gave me some good places to start. It does sound like metal on metal and I'm pretty sure it does not make the noise when accelerating in reverse. Does not sound like rattling marbles either. Thanks for the styling tips as well. I know it wouldn't be confused with Boss/Mach, I just wanted to try to add items that were listed in the catalog as being exclusive to those models and wasn't sure if they were offered as extras for others.

if it does not make the sound accelerating backwards, i think i know the problem. if this a worn, high mile motor, the crack bearings are worn and when you accelerate the crank slide backward just enough for the flywheel/flexplate to touch the starter. sounds impossible, but i have seen it happen. check it out.
