clunck in AOD output spline?

Hi all,

I did several searches and didn't find anything about this so here goes.

I have a very minor clunk that happens sometimes when I drive real slow and the AOD downshifts into first. It doesn't do it very often. So I checked it out and my differential has no play and does not whine. I also checked the driveshaft U-joints and they are tight. The only thing I could find with some play and make clunk by hand was the output shaft spline of my AOD, but the play isn't all that much. However, it can move around a little when you move it forward and reverse with the driveshaft. So what can be done to correct this and when does it become a big deal.

Thanks, Don

New splined yoke with aluminum driveshaft?

TTT, need more input. My AOD with Transgo shiftkit and 2500 RPM stall downshifts to first at about 5-10 MPH when coasting to a stop.

Also, if I get an aluminum driveshaft does it come with a new splined output yoke for the transmission end?

Thanks, Don

Nutty 5.0,

Thanks for the reply, yeah my TV is adjusted properly. I can actually wiggle the output shaft spline and make it move about 1/8" in any direction. I guess a 120K miles may have worn it a little. So when it gets a little worse I'll spring for an aluminum driveshaft and that should help with less mass and a new spline yoke for the tranny end.

Thanks Don. I actually picked up one of those kits. What is the procedure for adjusting the TV cable that you did? I am a little unclear of where to notch the min mark?? It says to pull the block back to firewall, then make a mark, but do you make the mark right up against the block?

Thanks!
Dave

Dave,

By marking the min. and max. you are defining the max. it could go and still get full throttle and the min. is to ensure there is no slack in the cable at idle. Then just mark it where they say and set it there. The problem is that you can't check the length because you have to push the little white lock up and it has to be disconnected to do it.

The play in the slip yoke is normal. The clunk Unless it really bothers you is not all that serious. It will not cause damage to the trans. Do you ever feel a cluck on the 3-4 upshift at light to moderate accel or feel a clunk on 4-3 downshift? The shift kit has changed pressure inside the trans and it will clunk on the 2-1 characteristically. Some do some don't it really depends on what the inside looks like.

No I don't hear or feel it at any other points. Just when driving really slow and slowing down.

I talked with a driveline guy that seemed to know what he was talking about and he told me that if you change the output yoke you need to also change the output bushing in the rear aod housing and the seal also. I don't know if the driveshaft person who did my repair replace the yoke or just removed the damper. I do know the rear seal wasn't changed so I don't think the rear aod bushing was changed either. He did say that the dampner isn't needed on most vehicles if the driveshaft is well balanced, but some do need it if vibrations persist.
